| | Jimmy Wyble / Red Norvo I found this clip on YouTube, from some old B Film Noir (I think). It may also be from the old television series "Johnny Staccato":
Seems like the film may not be the greatest, but worth it to see Jimmy Wyble and Red. He was the steady guitarist with Red, after Tal Farlow left.
This CD has Jimmy on guitar: Amazon.com: The Forward Look: Red Norvo, Red Norvo Quintet...........: Music
I think you can also do the MP3 download bit.

| | Jimmy Wyble was the greatest and the nicest Cat you would ever want to know. There is an old Red Norvo record with them tearing it up. I loved the title of the one tune... "I give you Fingins for your Neft".
You want challegning stuff check out some of Jimmy's two-line improvisation materials. I beleve David Oakes have some on his website for download.

One of my old recordings with Red, Tal and I believe Red Mitchell (pre-Mingus?) has a tune called "I'll Give You Finjans For Your Zarf". Maybe that's a contrafact of "Violets For Your Furs"? I get that from the lyric "I Bought You Violets For Your Furs...". The one on the record I have is really up-tempo. I'd love to hear this other version.
I've heard a lot of great things about Jimmy's teaching materials. Thanks Doc; I'll have to check it out.

| | "Finjans" are paper cups in the form of cones, and "zarfs" are the plastic holders you could put them in to add a handle and make the finjans stand upright. Too bad my guitar playing isn't as good as my trivia skills...
Great clip - these guys are pros. Interesting insight into the club scene in those days also. |

| | That's my ol' buddy Dave Stuckey who uploaded that on utube, he's got a good bunch of other guitar stuff in there too, Roy Lanham, Hank Garland, Jimmy Bryant, Les Paul, etc.
Red Norvo & Wyble also appeared in the original Ocean's Eleven, starring Sinatra& the rest of the rat pack
Sinatra dug the band so much he took them to Australia for a tour with him. One of the shows was recorded and Sony/Blue Note has released it on cd, good stuff, Sinatra & the band are rockin'!! |

Great stuff!
