Default Jay Umble- anyone like his books?

He seems from the Martino / Diorio school and his books contain some tasty lines. Was wondering if anyone else was aware of him or his books, and if they had any thoughts....?

Great player out of central PA. I don't know that much about his books but if they're as good as he is as player, I'm sure they have value.

Yes! Jay Umble is a great player and teacher. Great angular style ala Diorio. I don't have any of his books, but his class on Mikesmasterclasses.com is great! It's called the dominant chord matrix system (or something like that); your playing over dominant altered chord is guaranteed to reach a new plateau (at least it did in my case...). His other classes on the same website also seem cool - I plan to purchase them as soon as I"m done with this one...

Yes, I agree that the Jay Umble classes on MMC are great. I really like the modern harmonic concepts class, or something similarly titled, and the major lines class. Both full of extremely useful info.

I have Umble's blues book and I think it is very good. It is kind of "kitchen sink," which is somewhat unusual for the more recent Mel Bay jazz books, which I have found to be uniformly high-quality (especially Bruce Saunders's books). By "kitchen sink," I mean that he covers comping, soloing, creating bass lines, etc. So there might be some material that is more interesting, and some less interesting.

But a good addition to the library, for sure. He also seems like an extremely nice guy and is a great player, and like most of the folks on MMC very open, IIRC, to email correspondence/questions from folks like us.
