    I know what you mean harmonically but I think he came up via the organ/tenor combos that were, initially, playing for dancers so swing and projection were paramount - if you can utube the Blue Note John Patton album 'Along Came John' he plays 3 killer choruses on a track ( presumably dedicated to him, maybe after his solo?) called 'GeeGee', in my opinion that's what he was about.

    Grant appeals to me b/c of his great tone, the groove he had and he never used his technique to rise above the music he was playing...I think his appeal is b/c its harmonically something we can all grasp being able to play in our minds eye more so than other "more notey" players...maybe?
