| | Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth. They are a progressive metal band, which I understand many people definitely do not like that genre, but he plays 'musically' compared to most metal guitarists. He does not strictly rely on palm muting or lowered tuning, and he plays some nice fingerstyle as well. He also sings and writes every song.
Opeth is the only metal band I listen to, I love how the songs transition from heavy to soft to heavy etc. Great light and shade.
You have to listen to a whole song to get it all since it is not a verse/chorus format. After the 5:30 mark is why I love this band, and his guitar playing.

| | mr. beaumont; I didn't see you as a Sonic Youth fan.
For me, my favourite non-jazz guitarist and indeed favourite guitarist full stop is Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine.
He basically created an entirely new approach to using the guitar to make sounds.
And it was awesome. |

| | Hard for me to say- just got that vibe.
It's cool that you are- I love looking at some of the weird stuff you can get with prepared guitars and odd tunings. Very cool. |

| | While I don't like Rage Against The Machine, I've got a lot of respect for Tom Morello simply because of the massive amount of sounds he can pull out of his guitar. |

| | Tough to make such a list, but I will give you the guys who I listen to the most that aren't jazzers.
Michael Hedges
Bruce Cockburn
Jimmy Herring
Andy Summers (definitely gets into jazz territory with his solo stuff)
Julian Bream
Brad Paisley
Eric Johnson
Johnny A
Phil Keaggy
Larry Carlton
Thought it was odd to see Chet on several lists. I would call him a part time jazzer. Same with Robben Ford. |

It's hard to categorize. |

It's hard to categorize. | Yes, because Larry is known for pop/rock/smooth jazz stuff, and says himself that he is a wannabe jazzer. However, his work with Fourplay and Crusaders certainly challenges categorization. |

| | I can not believe no one mentioned Monte Montgomery yet. He is got to be one of the top 10 guitar players to ever walk the planet. I know that's a bold statement but you'd have to see him. It's a completely different level of playing that only gets more impressive everytime I see him play live. YouTube - Monte Montgomery - "Could've Loved You Forever"
Another one of my favorite "players" is Johnny Greenwood. He does a lot more that playing the guitar in traditional fashion and has become almost a "noise player".
Anyways if you haven't heard Monte you really need to check him out.

| | Too many to name as influences, and even more that I'm a fan of, but here's a start:
Steve Howe
Steve Lukather
Santana
Mike Campbell
David Gilmour
Joe Perry and Brad Whitford (Aerosmith)
Keith Richards
The Edge
Tim Reynolds
Some of these guys aren't the most technical, but they have the "it" for me in their feel and style.
...and really guys, how many of us would never have picked up a guitar if not for George Harrison? |
