I've seen him many times at Ryles in Cambridge Ma. back in the day (late 70's early 80's). He used to play in a guitar duo and I'd go just about weekly. A fine player who earned a international spotlight.

Found a cool vid of him and Howard Alden swingin' hard on a classic w/ Ruby Braff.
Dailymotion - You're a Lucky Guy - Ruby Braff - a Music video

There is more of him on youtube as well.

Wow, first time I've ever seen two guitars in a lineup!

One of my favorites.... really tasty player. I transcribed a couple tracks from his first album (I think it was) Shades Of Grey in like 1996. May have to try to find them in my disorganized mess of a life.

Tony Bennett's 85th Birthday concert at the London Palladium was on BBC4 TV last night. Brilliant concert and backing quartet with Gray Sargent outstanding on the guitar. He was playing a Godin Jazz box which sounded fantastic.

I had a three-guitar group with Gray back in the early 80s, sort of a Great Guitars line-up with Alan Dawson on drums, John Basile on electric guitar, I played nylon. Gray came out of Kenny Burrell and spent a lot of time learning somewhat obscure tunes by Tadd Dameron and Bix Beiderbecke, as well as every standard ever written, it seems, and is a great foil for Bennett. He's a very nice person and now looks very much like Tal Farlow, which is freaky.
