| | Wow, best guitarist who knows the instrument? Not sure how to answer that, or if there is an answer. I guess what comes to mind are guys who cross genres really well, like studio guys. They can play convincingly in a number of styles. So if that is true, here is a list of possible candidates.
Tommy Tedesco
Howard Roberts
John Jorgensen

| | This question is an exercise in futility. In the end it's just a matter of opinion. This is no different than the "Wes versus Benson" thread.
Like who you like, enjoy their playing, keep an open mind for discovering new (or old) players you may enjoy and spend your time playing & learning instead of trying to answer the unanswerable question.

| | I think a guy like bill frisell is keenly aware of all the sounds that lie within the instrument. That's a kind of mastery, IMHO.
I'm with the others who say "best" is unquantifiable, nor does it matter, but when I think of people who really "know the instrument" I think of guys like frisell... |

| | | I have only come across 3 players in my 37 years on this planet who make me really confused by what they do, and therefore in awe.
1. Allan Holdsworth
2. Ted Greene
3. Bryan Baker
They just seem to have such a unique approach that is beyond technical and yet musical. Most other players don't leave me scratching my head (although there are plenty that I love and admire).
Interesting to note I have studied directly w/ Bryan and he still confounds me. |

| | If we are adding the studio guys in there, I would have to chime in for Paul Jackson Jr, Steve Trovato, Brent Mason, and Carl Verhyen. |
