Default O' Donel Levy- Another Forgotten Giant

Looked through the search and couldn't find a mention of him on the forum yet, so figured I would do the honors.

O' Donel was a great soul jazz guitarist to come out of the early 70's. I first heard him a couple years ago when my brother (a hip hop producer) was sampling from his album "Breeding of Mind". Awesome playing, that album reminded me of some late Grant Green type stuff, though O' Donel would go on to show more extreme technique(Bensonesque?) on other stuff I have heard.

Small bio I found: "O’Donel Levy has performed and continues to perform at some of the biggest festivals with some of the biggest audiences in the world. He was the main attraction at the Montreux Festival. He’s played with the who’s who of blues, jazz, and even soul. He has appeared with the late great Miles Davis. He has stood beside Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff, and that’s just the beginning. If he hasn’t played with them, he has written music for them. He’s written music for Luther Vandross, Sarah Vaughn, and his friend, Herbie Mann. "

He had a stroke I read about a year or 2 ago and has been in rehab ever since to get his hands goin' again. Great player check him out.

Thanks for posting that. DC based guitarist, and former Lou Donaldson side man, Mark Mosley ( Guitarist Mark Mosley ) always speaks very highly of O'Donel Levy. Nice to see some videos of his playing.

Great player... I've always dug his energy. But you can't really compare him to Benson. Maybe if he had developed better technique he might have had a chance... I still dig his playing and he's a great entertainer and evangelist of jazz. We need more like him. Best Reg

Default O'Donel Levy, Guitar Superstar, from his drummer Dezzy Mckenna

Geday, Hi, I drummed with O'Donel Levy for 5 years, John McLaughlin came to watch him!! Dennis Chambers sat in on MY DRUMS!! The whole Winton Marsalis Band sat there open jawed!! Also he --ODEE (Irish Jewish and Black was his own running joke) was also as funny as Richard Pryor AND HE OFTEN BOUGHT THE DINNERS AND A FEW ROUNDS
Other jazz guitarists came from all over the world to watch him and wept into their beers. He also fixed up my drummin--no fills please!! No fills at all!! till i'm finished --some nights he took 47 choruses and was NEVER boring
Jah Bless you ODEE get well soon and sock it to em all over again!! ------signed---Australian Irish Drummer Des Mckenna, Hong Kong, Shianghai, Belgium, Ireland ex Rory Gallagher, Ex Chet Baker, ex Nat Adderley and I jammed with DIZ!!
