Default Assad Brothers

I have a CD by them called "Jardim Abandonado". They do a very impressive version of Rhapsody in Blue.

Anybody else know of them? Do they have other jaw dropping CD's out there

P.S. the younger sister is no slouch either.

I have seen them in concert a couple of times. Scary good musicians.

I have Latin American Music for 2 Guitars. Music by Astor Piazzolla, Leo Brouwer, Hermeto Pascoal, Radames Gnattali and one composition by Sergio. The contemporary harmony is not that far afield from jazz.

I also have their Scarlatti CD. They articulate all the ornaments on adjacent strings as opposed to hammer on/pull off trills.
It is a more intimate and more expressive reading of Scarlatti's harpsichord works.

sure. they're quite well known. i had a chance to see them but missed them. my loss.

i have not heard Badi play or sing but undersand that she had a bad bought with dystonia after over-practicing, and her fingers actually bent themselves backwards. a nervous system revolt against the owner so to speak. bad news, brother.

here's hoping that she's fully recovered!

Yes, I heard that about Badi too. But I think she's overcome the condition. I have her on a CD with Larry C and John Abercrombie. All acoustic. I'm pretty sure she did this CD after.

Bako, I'll have to check out those CD's thanks

My teacher knows them pretty well--he was the one who brought them to the United States, initially. They lived in Chicago for a while before as proper Brazilians, they relocated to warmer quarters.

I heard there was a 'Brazilian Guitar Summit" in Toronto a while ago. I wish they would have one in NY or even Newark, NJ. I would love to see that.

Here's one in NYC 2008. I didn't attend but heard good reports from friends.
For 2010-2011? I'll let you know if I hear of anything.

Guitar Marathon: The Brazilian Guitar at the 92nd Street Y
Sunday, January 27 at 2 & 7pm

Today's Brazilian guitar masters explore the jazzy sounds of Rio and the flavorful music of Heitor Villa-Lobos and other classical composers. The event features performances by Badi Assad, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Yamandú Costa, Roland Dyens, Arthur Kampela, Celso Machado, Fábio Zanon, and Romero Lubambo with Pamela Driggs. These performances are part of the 92nd Street Y Guitar Institute.
