I hope you don't want me to rave about how good that is, because I can't stand it.

I was "hoping" for feedback. To that end, your last four words suffice.

I'll see if there's any more feedback before saying what I dig about it.

Fair enough. I apologize about my comment being less than friendly.

didn't like it at all, although the drummer wasn't bad. he kept the beat sufficiently.

Well, this is the "other styles" sub-forum

Anyway, where can you talk about people like PJ Harvey or Björg and the way they craft their unique emotional landscapes, (er soundscapes)? I don't know if they have dedicated forums, but that would be a sort of a fan thing, so not cool.

In this song, from the moment that piano chord (I haven't figured out which it is) and the swirling background organ come in, she has me in her breathy, spidery grips until the end of the song. But that's just me

Not a fan of her music, but I actually enjoyed that., err, "minimalism", for what it's worth--no guitar parts, pretty much all MIDI, drum machine, et al. --it reminds me that one can make music at home rather easily using a DAW, some cool VSTs/audio units, and a basic/cheapo MIDI controller.

When I think of her music from what I remember in the mid 90s when she was in vogue, I expected some overdriven guitar, some very basic cowboy chords, some screaming, elemental, heavy rock beats. So, I guess this is a step UP from that.

That's precisely the stuff by her which I don't listen to. I think she has fun with that Rock singer persona but there is so much more to her:

I quite enjoyed that first video. I have one of her albums from way back and while I haven't listened to it in years, I do recall liking it a lot at the time.

Might not be jazz, but it also ain't your typical radio fodder, either.

Anything that is not radio fodder will get a listen from me. But having said that some radio fodder tunes can be a real hoot to jazz up! I saw Richard Thompson some time back and he did a cover of Britney Sears 'Oops! I did it again,' in the style of early medieval lute/guitar! Even with a 'Hey nonny nonny.' As for the mighty PJ she's ok and I get where she's coming from but she don't ring me bell. Prefer Tom Waits, now his tunes jazz up sweet...

They sure can write a great catchy pop tune, can't they? I discovered them through Weezer (I guess Weezer's former bassist Matt Sharp has something to do with them) and was really impressed. Ok, sorry. Thread hijack over.

As for that first video, I kind of like the drumbeat and her voice and the sounds (piano, organ) but it just doesn't really go anywhere for me.

Good evening, Peter C...
Very nice, thanks for posting. Not listened to PJ for a few years; there's still a lot of magic there. The piano evokes some Nine Inch Nails (great 'live' video...), and the vocals, 'Hope', a 'sort of' version of Leonard Cohen's 'Suzanne', by R.E.M.
Yes, we're definitely in the 'Other Styles' forum...

I dug this stuff. It's honest. Love it or hate it, it is what it is and it's original.

That "Airplane Blues" reminds me of some old Beatles track from the Hamburg days, some cover John would have belted out. Obviously the most commercial sounding track.

Speaking of which I need to listen to some solo Lennon in honor of October 9.
