I'm brand new to the forum and still in my infancy of learning about jazz guitar. Therefore, I'm not knowledgeable enough to make a suggestion to the top 100 list.

I do, however, have a question. I haven't yet seen any mention of a Les Paul recording to the list. Are there any worthy of the top 100? If not, then why?

Thanks,
Mike

Heh Guys, I'd like to throw a vote for Wes' Smoking at the Half Note. Something about that live vibe that was special. Now it may be out of print but Columbia had a double album of most of the really great Charlie Christian stuff. Also we've got to get Django on there somehow, right? Finally, a personal favorite Tiny grimes. He should be represented for just being the swinging-est cat ever.

Ok it's obvious that we have an enormous heritage in good jazz guitar. Check these contemporary jewels:
Martijn van Iterson: The Whole Bunch and Streetwise
Jonathan Kreisberg: The South Of Everywhere and Night Songs

I'm new, too, but am interested in any remarks that may be made by these jazz peeps. I've never considered Les Paul to be a jazz man, per se. I've always thought of him as a 'pop' guitarist. He worked with Jim Atkins, Chet's big brother, with that trio and Jim was a good jazz player as well as a big band guitarist but Les?........ I don't think he was considered a jazz guitarist.

We cannot have a 100 top jazz guitar albums without including Tal Farlow. Maybe include The Complete Verve Tal Farlow Sessions. Any other suggestions for the best Tal Farlow representation?
Also we will need representative titles from Mundel Lowe, Herb Ellis, Johnny Smith, George Van Eps and Kenny Burrell.

Most, if not all of these have already been mentioned. I thank the others for their lists. Gives me ideas of what to spend more money on at Amazon.

Joe Pass Top 100 albums

Hi, this is my first post. I had to chip in because I don't think anyone has mentioned one of my favourite jazz guitar albums of all time: For Django by the great Joe Pass. I had the privilege of seeing him live back in the 80s and it was the most impressive playing I've ever seen and heard. For Django is his best, most complete album IMHO.

Most of the records I would have mentioned are here already, so I'll just give a shout for Oscar Moore - his work with the Nat King Cole Trio is fine. Also, Paul Desmond's Live album has some beautiful playing from Ed Bickert.

Check This Out! Any record by Robert Normann

The Norwegian guitrist Robert Normann was such a genious that when Django Reinhardt was inviteted to Norway, he replied: "What do you need me for when you got Robert Normann"!

Normann's remaining family still sells his records from their website Robert Normann - www.robertnormann.no - buy "The definitive collection..." record 1-5. It will be the best few dollars or euros you have ever spent as a jazz guitarist (you pay a fee and then download the digitaly restored masterpieces). You can listen parts of most of his work here: Robert Normann - www.robertnormann.no

I'm glad some of you remembered artists like Herb Ellis, Tal Farlow. Let's not forget the late Tommy Tedesco formerly of Fernwood Tonight, The Gong Show, and many of contributions as a studio session player and mentor to Toto's guitarist. Tedesco was so smooth, he was talking to another musician while playing and made it look so easy, especially when not even looking at his fingers like it was nothing.

Dave Cliff and Friends - "When Lights are Low"
Bill Frisell - "Unspeakable"
Ernest Ranglin - "Below the Bassline"
Derek Bailey and Henry Kaiser - "Wireforks"

Not exhaustive by any stretch of the imagination and many I would have been inclined to add have already been mentioned (Joe Pass, Django, Kessel, Scofield... and on and on; oh, and hats off to whoever brought the remarkable genius Frank Zappa into the mix.)
If I was asked next week, my favourites would have changed (twice, probably.)

It's so subjective but I think it's a great idea for a thread and it's interesting to see folks' opinions as much as the final top 100. Not only that but it'll certainly bring more jazz into my field of vision and get me buying again (even though I've got no money since I spent it on a custom shop 335... I guess I'll have to buy less beer and food for a bit .)

As far as I'm concerned Jazz shouldn't be filed in the 'up it's own ringpiece' category on the shelf; John Zorn's "Jazz Snob Eat Shlt" always springs to mind if anyone gets anal about their favourite Jazzer. Your opinion is as valid as anyone elses and if you think Les Paul deserves a place in the list then get stuck in.
