Default MM modes according to Emily..

She suggests for resolving doms to think of the MM a half step up, and for non resolving doms to think of the MM a fifth up. Problem is, although the note sets are the same, there is a difference if instead you think of the Alt scale for the former and the Lydian Dominant for the latter. Sure, the difference is only the starting note, but this is a critical difference, no? Otherwise we'd think Cmaj for Bm7b5 - same notes, but makes more sense starting on the B, right?

I'm all for simplification, but is this over simplification?

I think it can help with fingerings. I really like the way the 4th mode of melodic minor lays on the guitar so I use it as much as I can.

If I see C7 I know I can play the 4th mode off of the root, C7#11, off of the tri-tone, C7alt, or off of the b7, C7b13.

I also do this with comping, if I see C7 I might play a C7#11 chord, or an F#7#11 chord, C7alt, or a Bb7#11 chord, C7b13.

Just one way of thinking of things.

With the Bb7#11, do you use the E as well as the F, or drop the F?

I'd drop the F, something like this.

For the mode I would use E and F.
