The best book I have ever seen on this topic is Garrison Fewell's Jazz Improvisation for Guitar- A Melodic Approach. He runs you thru many triad shapes on the neck and gives you a system for organizing them.

Yeah, Garrison's book is a great overview of this topic.

The way I think about upper structure triads is to pair them with either the tonic triad or 4-note chord.

So if I have C7 I can think C + D, or C7 + D, or even C7 + D7 if I want.

For Cm7 i can think Cm + Dm, or Cm7 + Dm, or Cm7 + Dm7

For Cmaj7 I can think C + D, or Cmaj7 + D, or Cmaj7 + D7

Default upper structure triads

adding the single note is okay but when you use the triads to me its more rewarding your there but faraway enough to still be in touch with the chord and best it sounds good
