Default Practical Standards Study Group Jan. 2012 Song Poll

We had a vote in Dec. on whether to do a Christmas song or a Jazz blues tune.

The vote was a dead heat. So we did a Christmas song in Dec. and now for the Jazz blues tune in Jan.

Being a blues makes this an easier task to lean the chords off and the melody all happens in just 12 bars so this is going to be a lot faster for me than most other tunes in these threads. Seeing as Straight no Chaser is winning, I had a look at that and the melody is nuts :-). It is just one lick repeated with slight variations of phrasing and position in the bar and variations in the last note and ends with a chromatic run of all 12 notes. Played at 200bpm I found it hard to catch but great fun; I can do it at about 170. Dat man Monk was a clever bugger. D Natural Blues is also going strong but is more guts and soul and less intellectual callous forethought. Two cool tunes!!!!

Looks like Melodius Thunk is leading by a 16th note!

Barring any last minute ballot box stuffing it appears Straight No Chaser is cruising to a win. I voted for D Natural Blues but only because I have been struggling with SNC for several years with limited success. The unconventional timing in the head is just too much for my atrophied brain. I intend to buckle down and work hard this time, but if I still have problems, I'll just sit out the first chorus and come in later.....I saw Mike Stern play this on YouTube reallllyyy fast! That may be the key to the whole thing....play it so fast you can't tell if the phrasing is correct or not.....

I look forward to meeting everyone in this group. Therman

The phrasing is murder and it is very fast at the usual tempos people play this. All I have done to try to learn the head was to get a band in a box version of it and slow it right down to half speed and then do it bar by bar. I could then play along in tempo at 100bpm. It is cheating because I can hear the melody being played as I play it but I learned the phrasing. Then I speeded it up 5bpm at a time (took all day) until I got it to 160-170. 160 is comfortable; 170 is a bit fast. I can then lay out the melody track on BIAB and play without the crutch but the phrasing is a bit sloppier when I do that but, as you say, if it is fast enough, it is less noticeable :-).
