He is also my favorite sax player. I have collected a lot of his music over the years but I really love the the music he did with Ed Bickert.

Hi Richard, there are probably many of us who love Paul Desmonds' music style and their may be transcriptions available but I don't have a source for them.

Richard, try Jim Hall. He's a great guitarist and has played/recorded with Paul Desmond quite a bit.

Go to pandora.com and set up a Paul Desmond station and a Jim Hall station and give them a listen.

As far as guitarists who play like Desmond, I would have to submit Ed Bickert himself, who's solos are as melodic and thoughtfully constructed as Desmond's, with the added chord punctuations. Jim Hall and Jimmy Raney also have similar Desmond-like phrasing and imaginations.

Default Bluesette

Our poll clearly indicates "Bluesette" will be the winner so here is a head start for the backing track. This backing track is realtracks BIAB jazz waltz style with a 4-bar intro and a standard ending with 4 choruses.

Bluesette (F)_Render.mp3 - File Shared from Box.net - Free Online File Storage---> Backing track

Bluesette.pdf - File Shared from Box.net - Free Online File Storage----> PDF leadsheet

have fun with "Bluesette"!

Hey Howie... cool. I'm putting in a plug for one of my regular gigs... this Sunday I'll be performing with a B-3 trio... we'll be burnin up the place... and we're always locked in the groove. I'll be broadcasting the gig live on the net.
Sunday 3pm -6pm Pacific standard time. I'm pushing the gig because I'll make sure we play some tunes for us to analyze and see in live jazz setting. We'll cover some version of Bluesette, I'll write out a Jesse van Ruller tune, either Secret Champ or Circles and a Martijn van Iterson tune from his "The Whole Bunch" CD. We don't have set lists... we just take off... it's one of my favorite gigs.
I'll post The Web site Sat. Morning... Sorry about self promoting... somewhat embarrassing, but it will be great example of what happens to standards when jazz players have fun... we'll be covering standards and in somewhat standard versions... Reg

Thanks Reg, sounds like a lot of fun and will be educational as well. Many of us here always benefit from your practical advice and comments.

THat is some whistling by Toots. It is now a very old fashioned sounding thing to do but very effing hard!
Here is a killer vid by Louis Stewart and Mundell Lowe doing Bluesette (in Cork).

I have this record. It's in storage and it's been so long since I've heard this version, which is the original I believe. So great. People sometimes forget what a great guitarist and whistler he is because of the virtuosity on the harp.

I saw Toots play at the now defunct "Fat Tuesdays", corner of 17th and 3rd Ave in NYC. It's amazing how musical the guy is.

The only record that I can find with LS playing Bluesette is on a record with German guitarist Heiner Franz
Jardis Records - Louis Stewart, Heiner Franz: Winter Song
It is a very nice record anyway.
By complete co-incidence, I saw Martin Taylor and Andreas Varady in Dublin on Saturday night and they played Bluesette. This is a sound check they did of that song from a few days ago.

Hey guys. Just thought I would share this with you.

This is how I use these "Practical Standards"-threads. I use them for learning new songs, to practice my reading and just to relax and have fun with some great backingtracks. The following recording is far away from what I usually sound like (IMO), but most of the time this is how I do it - one hour of reading, practising, getting to know the changes, some improvising over a backing track. And no more. There's just not enough time.

My point is: Thank you, wiz and everybody else who keeps these "Practical Standards"-threads going! I really enjoy them, and it helps me evolve as a musician and an educator.

My blind stab at "Bluesette", as naked and revealing (and flawed) as we all sometimes are (well, maybe not Reg):
