| | Reg's Analysis of Bluesette:
Reg said, “I have target areas and I'm playing chord patterns to get to those target areas”.
Compare the chords below to your lead sheet and listen to the video. Reg is adding a lot of V and II-V progressions to get to the 'target areas'.
I wrote out the chords he plays starting at 4:40 of the video. (If you find any errors, please let me know) Check it out:

| | Hey Frank... cool. It's close enough, every time I played the tune it would be different, unless I wrote it out.
The only difference is for example the Bb7b9b13 in bar 8 is usually really a subV, (E9#11). same harmonic area, just root motion... I generally have rhythmic patterns I use to help create the feel of movement...even if the harmonic area is really the same. And yea very simple approaches, some chromatic as well, sometimes a functional sub also. This is a pretty straight tune... so I keep it that way.
Great job, your really good with all the details, Thanks Reg |

| | Bluesette Hey Reg, very good analysis! I tend to think of Bluesette as a jazzy waltz with a lot of opportunities for b5 subs and a good bassline. thanks for sharing your approach.

| | yea Howie... with all the II V's, subs and sub of subs... You can use a lot of different approaches, lots of room to use same idea and develop harmonically... Reg |

| | My try Hey guys, great job here with this standart!
First of all, thanks to wiz for posting and helping here to start learning this tune here...May be it would be great to do it separate topic "Bluesette" as it was before...
PerA - nice take, I feel your attitude!
Jayx - I love your nylon, it makes your touch in this tune so sensual, love it!
PaulD - love your sound experiments! Seems like you have a lot of fun with your GR-33, thats great, one day I will buy this toy for myself either, just need a time to learn how to use it)
fep - love your tone, your guitar is an art-work, playing guitar takes you so deep into emotions and feeling, thats great to see, thanks to your new webcam!)))
Reg - thanks a lot for all you do here, you are the great teacher, I'm looking forward for your comments on my take!
So, I take the rythm section from Abersold track, deleted the piano and recorded rythm guitar by myself...I feel this way better...Anyway, guys, please listen to it and let me know what you think/feel about that. I really enjoyed your version as well. Your pick and pick/fingers approach works so well as you switched back and forth. The tone remained full and consistant for each. I also like the way you play out of chord shapes as opposed to a scale type approach. I think it makes your melodies and phasing strong. Congrats. R |

| | Thanks, Swinger. I loved your tone on your recording. The ornaments you use add lots of life to the melodies, I'm a big fan of trills and vibrato. The pedal point idea with pull offs in the middle - nice. You started to play some blues at the end - Very cool! I know some good players try to avoid that stuff, but I love it. A personal thing i guess. |

| | Jazzuki - Thanks, you made my day. Yes, Reg's analysis is spot on as are all his posts and playing. I've been hearing about the song surgeon, and think i may get it - there's so much cool stuff on youtube. I need to take advantage. Would love to hear some of your music, as well. (Have I missed it? It could be.) |

| | Hey Swinger...
I know of two melodies for Bluesette, sounds like a 3rd one starting at 0:57? Or is that your own melody?
Good job, I enjoyed your playing. |

| | There are four distinct melodies in Bluesette. I used to kid Toots about it, yelling at him for making us learn 4 melodies, and he said "I am lucky to get all the way through one". |

| | The melody I played is going through 4 circles, the second is repeat of first, and then 2 circles of melody, which are actually written in both fakebooks I found with Bluesette)) Kinda weird, the last melody is really reminds pretty simple improvise for the whistling))) Thanks fep for your comment! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
