| | yea Jay... cool. Very melodic ideas...aren't you going through the ten step program to quit tonal areas and get into chord tones...tone-aholic, isn't that a 7 or 8 step program. sorry weak attempt at humor. Anyway I dig your lines... nice.
Yea Ken... I've used that preparation technique many times... Reg |

| | Ken, thanks man I dug your octave playing very clean.
Reg, your take on this was great (as usual) and please please don't tell the guys in the tone-aholic program you caught me ;-) |

| | Joy Spring improv Reg, Ken & Jay, thank you very much for posting Joy Spring on this thread. I gain something from each post and at my age & disposition that is simply great! I love this thread and look forward to each post.
As a side note, my little group has lost our keyboard player so I am busy trying to re-arrange our sets with me doing all of the intro's. We are now a quartet consisting of a Vocalist, a guitarist, a bass and a Drummer playing mostly GAS with a some jazz titles. We have decided to try to work without a keyboard player. Any advice you guys may have would be sincerely appreciated.

| | Howie,
Become very comfortable with space.
Trust your bass player and drummer.
If each person can make the song speak solo then each additional musician is a bonus. |

| | Hey Bako, your post is pretty mal-formatted for those of us with small screens. I've wrapped your post in the CODE tag to force a fixed-width font, and made some edits to how I think you intended for it to lay-out on-screen: Code: FMa6/9----------FMa7------------Dm9-------------Dm7Sus-----------Gm7Sus-----------Gm9Sus-----------Gm7b5-------------C7b9
X X A D G C-----X X C E F C-----X X A D E C-----X D G C F X--//--X X G C F Bb-----X X Bb C F A-----X F Bb Db G X-----Bb E G Db X X--//
FMa9------------FMa9------------Dm9-------------Dm7Sus-----------Bbm9--------------Bbm9--------------Eb7Sus-------------Eb7Sus
F X G C E X-----A X G C F X-----X F D E A X-----X X A F G C--//--X F Db F Ab C-----X F C Db Ab X-----X Eb Ab Db G X-----Bb G Ab Db X X--//
FMa9------------Dm9-------------Ab13Sus------------Ab9+---------------Gm7Sus-----------Gm9Sus-----------C9Sus------------C7+--------------FMa9
A F G C X X-----X D F C E X-----Ab X Gb Db F X-----X E Bb C Ab X--//--X X C D F Bb-----X X Bb F A C-----X X C F Bb D-----X X Bb E G# E--//--X X C G A F
Does that look right to you? You have some interesting voicings in there. I like where you're going with this, even though I'm not quite sure where that is |

On my screen, my post looks fine, I don't really know what happens when it leaves my computer room. Thanks for the heads up.
I'll edit/reformat it in a safer way. |

| | Joy Spring Bako: Thank you very much for the advice. The drummer is an old pro but our bass player hasn't played for many years. We are teaching him about GAS and he has responded very well. He doesn't do any solo's yet but he is working on walking bass concepts and his time is really good.
Also, your voicing exercise is very interesting. I havn't had time to play through it yet but it looks good to me.

Really nice groove!! |

Tom | I have been stupidly busy and apologize for not posting. I hope to tonight after work (yup I work on Sundays!)
Feel free to move on, though. |

| | joy spring Another good job, Reg! I love your video examples and this one for Joy Spring has some very good comping concepts. I think I need to add more octaves to my solo's & comping to add more variety to my approach. It is really nice to be able to visualize the chords and positions you use and I get a lot of ideas to experiment with when I watch you play. Thank you very much,

Here is my contribution to the project. Perhaps a bit manic, but waddya gonna do? Certainly several "extraneous" notes that I would have preferred not to be there.
I'm not overly used to playing so many changes at fast tempos. Hence the over reliance on blues licks at times.
Had to trust my ears for the head... think I got it right.
BTW...I stop suddenly in the middle of the solo because someone walked into the room. (it was going on too long anyway)
Also some weird glitch cut out a few seconds of my improv.
Anyway, I had a lot of fun learning this tune, and hearing everyones renditions.
I am looking forward to the next one. |

| | Joy Spring sgreb: Sounds like you have a very good handle on the head and your version definitely swings in a nice groove. I heard some very good lines and I like the way you use the whole neck when you improvise. Also I liked the chordal improv toward the end and it left me wishing you had not been interrupted. I enjoyed listening to you and I am looking forward to our next tune. This a great thread!

| | Thanks for the comments. Sometimes i feel like I'm really flailing on tunes like these. I should probably work more on "lines" so it's not such a brain drain to play.
Thanks also for identifying my "groove". That's one area I've always been pretty solid at, except sometimes I tend to rush.
I dig this thread a lot too. |

Tom | I have been away for 2 trips and all I have managed to sort out was the head (at anything like full tempo). As a medium/beginner, it is tough. Still, it is a great tune and I am just posting this to say thanks to you and all the rest for all the versions/takes/tracks/chord sheets.
