| | Newcomer Hello everyone, I've been battling with jazz guitar all my adult life -- and the guitar always wins! Favourite modern guitarist is John Scofield; favourite guitarists from the past are Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell. I'm reasonably OK with comping and chord theory but would like to be more competent with chord melody and improvising. One visitor to our small Australian town is a professional opera singer and she likes jazz. It's a big thrill to accompany her, and I'm looking forward to improving my playing through this marvellous forum. Thanks to everyone involved. |

| | Whato!
I got into jazz when travelling around India about 12 years ago. I had a blue note tape in my collection and would wack it into my walkman and it would just loop for most of the 24 hour bus/train journeys. That amount of time got my head to appreciated the intricacies of the genre. I'm now hooked and really need guidance on how to go from being able to make the chords into building myself into a competant jazz guitar player. I love chord melody a la Herb Ellis and Kenny Burrell, I really love the bossa nova style with Astrid Gilberto, Django is fantastic as is Charlie Christian. I guess I just love it all but prefer the swing era and 50s/60s bossa. Please help me to find a route to teach myself as I live in Thailand and Thais generally don't go for it so teachers are impossible to find! Thanks a lot to everyone out there and hope you can steer me to my goals.
Happy Christmas to you all
cheers

| | Life is becoming incredibly busy, especially with the wretched economy. I'm "starting" to play again. Very weird things are beginning to happen. Please be patient.
I'll be back. Jazz guitar has been a reasonable lifeline for
me. I can't thank you folks enough.
Thanks,
Tom Ruppert

| | Hi All,
It has been awhile since my last post. I started as a drummer and switched to guitar. At present I do alot of music down in Florida for the retired folks. It is commercial stuff with lots of 50's & 60's pop, rock and country. About as jazzy as I can get is "As Time Goes By" or "Cry Me A River".
Wish I had more time for really learning all the rich chords that are not readily available in my head or fingers. The basics are no problem, but voicings and arrangements take me awhile. Emile DeCosmo has taught me alot ( POOK ) and turned me on to Jack Grassel who has a fantastic DVD video for jazz guitar from Hal Leonard.
Our season is almost over here in sunny Florida and with the people returning north go many of my gigs so I will try to stay more up to date here.
Gary

| | Hi! Hi everybody! I play guitar for about 20 years but just for the last one year I take lessons so, I am a beginner. I work hard with chords, scales, chord scales, patterns, lines etc. It's a hard road, but worth walking on it. I am glad I'm registered here! |

| | As a relative newbie to the Internet (<4mths) I'm interested in how people draw that line. I called someone out on another guitar site last week. Somebody googled the poster and he was a self-proclaimed Marketing guru (although his post was rock guitar-related.) I have a website which I never plug because it is purely commercial and completely unrelated to music. To me that's an easy line to draw. I know a guy on another site who runs a studio with tuition, band management and bookings. These are all included in his signature and he declared them from Day One, but he also contributes well as a general member in their forum. Again, no problem. What about people posting links to soundclick, icompositions, etc, where the tracks are commercially available in many cases? What ratio of commercial product to freebie "teasers" constitutes spam? I am not in the music business so it's an easy decision for me but many of us here have commercial product available: mp3s, lessons, books, live playing. Bernardo Basso might be spam on this site, but if he went to Koblo.com he would be just another member because their stated aims include promotion of members' material. I'm interested to hear where people draw the line. |

| | I think anyone should be able to post links to anything they have to offer, sites and products, that they think members of the forum would like to check out. The only thing I don't think should be here is people who come into the forum and only post links to products etc.
If people are a "legit" member of the forum and contribute in other ways besides selling products or promoting websites I think they can post whatever they want. As long as it's something the readers of the forum would like to check out and might enjoy.

| | I have to agree with M78W. Many people, including myself, are new to using the internet as a jazz guitar resource - older generation etc. It is often valuable to know what is out there and how far technology has advanced in allowing us to be self activating on our quests.
Obvously, nobody wants the hard sell rammed down their throats, but if a site or product is contextualised into the realm of improving our performance on an axe or getting over some kind of hurdle then I think it may be to many people's advantage to know the product or site exists. It's called sharing, in my eyes.
Having said that, I firmly beleive that if something is sold through this site then Dirk should get a 'taste' as they say in certain families from New Jersey! After all, he is putting a lot into this site and it would be very unfair if people got to earn off the back of it without him receiving some kind of benefit.
How do people feel about that?
cheers all |

| | I agree with Matt on his first point - I checked that user's profile and his first and only post was an ad for his new album. For me that is definite spam 100%
I also agree with Eddy - if you just want to advertise, pay for it, and you can have as much as you want. I actually feel offended when somebody posts an ad thinking I'm so slow that I won't notice it's an ad!
I have been on many sites and 2 criteria stand out: The welcomes for new members, and the time and effort put into answering newbie questions. On both of those criteria this is the best website I have found! I think this site is entitled to maintain this standard and take a very hard line on promotional links. |

Banksia, I'm in full agreement with you. the welcoming is very warm, the postings are extremely supportive and I can't stress enough the positive vibe as well as constructive comments posted by the forum members. This site is an example to all and It is my sincerest hope that it both stays that way (I need to step up to make my own contributions) and that those in the business of music/guitar/amp and jazz support this site by advertising their wares in a constructive manner- paying for advertising slots in the knowledge that they are doing their bit to keep alive a very rare 'animal' in this day and age of instant gratification.
Hpe that I've not come across too heavy but Dirk needs financial support to keep this going (we all have to put food on the table and clothes on the backs of our family members) and the industry needs customers so why not a meeting of minds on this? | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
