Books It's a book...

Good afternoon, whippersnapper...
'The Guitar' is a book written by Barney Kessel, now out of print. I hear it's interesting, but not read it.
Hope this helps...

Interesting

I've had that book (a long time ago).

I remember it as a very early book and interesting. Barney Kessell got some opinions and tips down in print.

How much you asking?

I have that book, too - it's been proudly on display on my living room coffee table for years! Barney wasn't afraid to voice his opinions about what it takes to be a pro.

Hey backliner, welcome - a fellow Santa Cruzer! I lived there from '83-93.

Thanks Jeff,
Yeah I settled here in 1974 as a musician, went to Cabrillo College for Music, the whole bit. Tried to transfer into upper division 4-year, but got married and the whole dayjob thing happened instead.

I think I bought that Barney Kessell "The Guitar" book shortly after landing here. He was always a favorite after I heard the "Easy Like" album.

Nice place to live. I moved there in 83 to go to school at UCSC - which I did on and off until '93 without graduating... :-0 ...then I moved back to the east coast and finished off my degrees in EE. Never could figure out a way to move back - there just don't seem to be any technical jobs there. Maybe after I make my millions and retire I would be able to afford moving back to Santa Cruz.

Love Barney Kessell's sound - just recently got into him - I'd like to check out a copy of this book, but the asking price for an old copy on Amazon is something ridiculous like $300.00!

Oh I wouldn't pay that much for it! It's an interesting book, but any of Tommy Tedesco's books are more entertaining and funny too.

I was an Electronics Technician once but never made the leap to Engineering. A friend from the service now heads up the EE program at UCSC. He was a much better technician when we were in, probably because of his Ham radio background. I was one of the worst!

Next time I'm out visiting, maybe I'll look you up and you can teach me a thing or two about jazz guitar, and I'll teach you some EE stuff. :-)

A thing or two is about all I know of jazz guitar.

I'll pass on the EE stuff. Since retiring from my dayjob, I never want to go back into my left brain again!

Eureka! This thread prompted me to take a fresh look at Barney's book. Then I realized that if I put the book under my Henriksen JazzAmp 112's 2 front feet with the back of the book facing out and flush with the front of the amp discreetly displaying the title and author, it would make an elegant minimal amp stand (just tilting the front of the amp up an inch or so). It sounds great! And I like to think of it as paying homage to a truly wonderful guitarist. I hope Barney's looking down and smiling!

Hai Guys...I was one of the first in the Netherlands who bought and listened to BK records..I still own (and play) all his Contemporary records.
I once owned a BK Gibson (bought it from an American student in need for some cash!) and stupidly sold it a couple of years ago.
I bought Barney's book in '69 ans still use it sometimes, but if somebody wants to buy it, let me know. dekkerhans@msn.com.
