first off, I came across this site: (go to his developing jazz vocabulary)
Glenn Kostur
I was looking at a Clifford Brown transcription last night, and noticed he really does "chase the changes" as he targets 3rds and encloses chord tones with chromatics left and right. When I was 18, I first heard Clifford, but at that tempo that he usually plays at, I couldn't (still have a hard time) hearing what he's doing, but chord tones are DEF there.
Meanwhile, I started thinking about how different (obviously) Miles was from Clifford, where in almost every take I've heard Miles do, he doesn't really target a whole lot, relying alot on melodic cells and motifs. (I'm sure you already knew that)
Then I got to thinking, has there been a player who balances vertical with horizontal playing, ie change-running and melodic developement (seperate of the harmony) equally? I can't think of one
