| | Martino video baffles me! YouTube - MA-004 ? Pat Martino Interview 2 of 2 (Guitar Lesson)
This Martino interview got me to thinking, seriously deep. First off, Pat says he got bored with being confined to certian sounds, and it made me realized that I myself, have had a tendency to rely too much on cerftain patterns and ideas that have become my everyday vocabulary. This interview makes me want to experiment more on my own ideas, and approach music differenlty.
However, and I know Pat is known for being an "outside thinker," he says there is significance in the opposite of color, and that ther is spiritual (he calls it reality) significance in the number of flat keys on a piano, and in the number of naturals on the piano.
I honestly think, and this is only MO, that the number of anything is irrelevant, and while there is significane in light and dark energies and forces, consonance and dissonance, tension and resolve, I don't understan how Pat applied that concept to his progression and practice as a guitarist and musician.
CAN ANY OF YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT HE IS TALKINBG ABOUT? |

| | I have met and talked to Pat on a number of occassions, and each time I came away thinking that he is just a wonderful spirit, and really seeks to be in touch with all that surrounds him in life.
First, watching his instructional videos is brutal for me due to his monotone approach and his use of esoteric language. In fairness, it is tough to describe music on a deep level. His concepts aren't that hard to understand, but he reminds me of Carlos Santana at times with the metaphysical thing. But hey, that is how he percieves it. Doesn't mean it is the way we experience it though.
I enjoy his playing, being around him when I get the chance, and learn what I can from this very unique individual. |

| | I think I have a pretty good idea of what Pat's talking about, of course I'm not in harmony with the concept yet, I merely know what it is he's speaking in regards to.
Read a book called Zen Guitar. I picked it up a few weeks ago thinking it was just another book with some shapes, chords, and tips, but I have to say this book remarkably changed my perspective on not just guitar, but life altogether.
I won't give anything away, it's short read and contains fabulous insight, I'll provide a link. Amazon.com: Zen Guitar (9780684838779): Philip Toshio Sudo: Books |

| | He's talking about the growth and development of the auditory cortex and cochlea.
So, when you're young, you are drawn to constanance (mary had a little lamb), as you get older and are exposed to more dissonane, you become accusomed to it and eventually perfer certain levels of dissonace to perfect constanance.
The more you listen the more this happens. I believe that this is an evolution of man that can be documented (and has been) by the evolution of harmony.
More specifically, he makes the case that constanance and dissonace are opposites and as your ear tends more twards one, you get further from the other. Therefore what you used to percieve as constanant, you now hear as dissonant and vice versa. (he's doesn't mean that the actual sound changes, just that the way we feel it changes). I completely agree, I mean, when I as 12 I didn't like any of the music I listen to now, and I don't like now what I listened to then.
He is saying that he arrived at this conclusion on his own very early on and therefore views and has viewed constanance and dissonace as two side of the same coin with equal measure and value.
as least thats what I got out of it.

| | Tim... your the man...really way beyond your years, you have my respect etc..for what it's worth and that may not be much. Careful with that evolution word, your headed for some serious discourse... Cool stuff...not just related to Martino, what about our better understanding of what harmony is and how to use it according to physical properties... acoustics of music... I'm not going to fall off the edge of the world...I can get back to where I'm started from... and without Mr.Wizard. I'm not making any reference to linear or circular theological interpretations, just music. Dig all your posts man..keep them rollin... Reg |
