Default Never Will I Marry

Have absolutely fallen in love with this tune; we'll be performing it in my little 6-piece combo this semester. Any interesting ideas for improv? The changes are:

Ebmaj7 Ebmaj7 Dm Dm
Ebmaj7 Ebmaj7 Dm Ebmaj7
Abmaj7 Abmaj7 [Am-D7] Gm7
[Em7-A7] Dmaj7 [Em7-A7] Dmaj7
Ebmaj7 Ebmaj7 Dm Gm7
Cm7 Cm7 F9sus Bb6

This song really evokes strong emotions in me; I can't really describe it, but something like driving through a big city late at night in the middle of the summer with all the windows down; simultaneously happy and sad. Melancholy. Yes, that's it.

Mostly right now I'm just doing pentatonic and major-scale stuff over the Eb-Dm section, then some basic ii-V riffs over the other stuff. Do some of you have some more esoteric ideas? Even though the song plays at a pretty quick pace, it feels spacious - and I would like to play with developing some large-scale melodic ideas.

I'll probably also transcribe Cannonball's solo on this version...

YouTube - Jazz Vocals - Nancy Wilson - "Never Will I Marry"

...as well as the version he and Wes Montgomery put down on the "Poll Winners" album. Anyone want to PM me, I can shoot them the mp3 of that version.

This is also one of my favorite tunes, Cannonball. Wes, Victor Feldman, Sam Jones, Louis Hayes. It don't get no better than that!

Hah, cool tune, I was about to post a reply but then checked the date on the original post. Jeff, how did the performance go?

Wow, the dead walk among us! I had completely forgotten about this post. Apparently so has everyone else for the past two years. :-0

IIRC we never did play it in a performance setting, just in rehearsal a few times. I think the other musicians didn't take to it as strongly as I did. It's still on my rotation list though.

Here's another great tune that puts me in a similar mood:

George Coleman - Amsterdam After Dark - YouTube
