John Scofield SYMETRICAL DIMINISHED from John Scofield

Some nice jazz lines created by John Scofield on his "On Improvistion" edu.video.
Symetrical Diminished scale -one of most important scale in jazz.
Works nice over alt. dominant chords.

Thanks for posting this, Kris. I've been working on the diminished scale(s) for a few months now and was just looking for some more interesting lines.

Do you have the Scoefield video? Is it good?

I looked for it on Amazon...you can get old VHS copies from some unscrupulous sellers but those jack-wads are asking for $100.00. I think I might have seen parts of this before a couple of years ago - is this the one where he starts going through the modes of the major scale with amazingly interesting results?

Too bad it isn't available on DVD. But I've been able to find a lot of it on YouTube. I think what I'm taking away from watching these clips is that I still have a lot of work left to do with the major, melodic minor, whole-tone and diminished scales. :-)

Isn't this "Symmetrical Diminished scale" the same as the "Half whole tone scale" we've been using for a long, long time.

Nuff

Sure, but were you using it in 1983? :-)

Anyway, this was a master class, so it's more educational than it is visionary.

Thelonius Monk was a master at these sounds way back in the 1930/40's.

An easy song to check out is Epistrophy

Do not forget about "Diminushing" by Django Reinhardt/1947/...
Great new take of this song made James Carter with Adam Rogers on guitar/2009/.

I know guys, I was just pointing out that this was an instructional video that was showing students about the diminished scale; I don't think it was Scofield's intent to be breaking any new ground here.

I think we all agree, I was only trying to make it clear to any Forum members who might not know that the "Symmetrical Diminished scale" is the same as the "Half whole tone scale".
