Default ? for CAGED players.

For those of you who use the CAGED method of chord shapes: do you always use the same finger for each note (of a particular shape) that you fret as you play through a tune? I've always played a more linear approach, playing up and down the neck, often using just 2 strings at a time.
Just trying to check out some different approaches, thanks, todd.

Hey Todd, I'm not a CAGED player when playing jazz but use a form of it to organize other styles of playing. I think just about any system will have to be flexible to use when improvising. If you're playing licks over changes I'm sure you can use the same fingering each time, but that's really just the first step. You'll want to (you may already know this or do this) be able to play what you hear and want to play at any point on the neck so it would be impossible to use the same fingering EVERY time you play a position/scale/lick/phrase/whatever.

One approach that I like a lot is playing phrases and licks starting with every finger on every string-giving you a ton of ways to play things. It also forces you into some creative ways to see the fretboard-even if they aren't all useful!

Hope that helps some!
