I've been hearing this term thrown around lately. Can anyone explain to me what a modal pentatonic scale is and how they are formed? And, assuming by the name, is there one for each diatonic mode?
A pentatonic is essentially any 5 note scale. A modal pentatonic is just that: a subset of a standard (7 note) modal scale containing only 5 mode-defining notes. They mostly leave out usual suspects like the 4th, 3rd or 5th, and concentrate on the mode-defining notes like the 6th and 9th in Dorian for example.
