Default Meditation by Jobim

Does anyone have some wisdom on playing over these changes? I particularly have problems with the B7sus to B7 in measures 3 and 4. Not quite sure how to treat those 7 chords. Is it a V that goes to E minor or Emajor---do I use the G# and C# or play those as naturals?

I don't know that tune -- got a link to the sheet music?

In general, I often treat things like B7sus B7 as a ii - V, as F#m7 B7 in this case. The suspended 4th (E) works as the 7th in F#m7.

Yes, I see your point but if I am treating it as going to Emajor then your plan works well but if it is going toward e minor then an F#-7b5 to B7b9 would be the way to go (hence the G or G#, C or C# question). I am not certain if it is going to Emajor or Eminor.
The tune is in the Real Book --

I always think of that as VI-V (C-B7) like a flamemco thing that never resolves. That opens me up to E harmonic minor

That is kind of what I was thinking (E harmonic minor with G and C natural) but it does not seem to sound quite right to me. E minor also seems closer to Cmaj than does Emajor. I wish it would sound better to my ears.

I am looking at the chords in the real book.

Me personally? I would treat the B7 sus as myxo b6, (E MM).

When you get to E-7 A7#5 D-7, I would treat all of them as being in D MM.

D-7 G7#5 as C MM.

With F-7 and Bb7 you have several choise's. You could treat it as a ii V in Eb.
You could treat it as Eb MM or F MM if you want. Whatever sounds good to your ear. I prefer F MM.

HM is a little edgy for the C, B7, but phrygian dom works if you want it to. Again, whatever sounds best to you.

For the E-7 E dim, D MM works. Or you can use Dim if you wish or HM.

Default Thanks

Thanks for all the input--I will experiment with some of those--especially interested to the try MinMaj7 scale over that.

Both MM and HM create the, minor M7 chord. You will find that MM is more conducive to melody. The minor 3rd interval between the b6 and 7 of HM makes it a bit harsher, though I love HM. I think if you treat MM right you will be very pleased with the outcome.

In the measures 3 and 4 an E harmonic minor fits pretty well IMHO.
