In what context have you seen this expression? Like an "air of insouciance?" Or, in the "rareified air of improvisation?"

I don't know about jazz, but in classical, this is sometimes used to describe certain music that "sounds" improvised. Impromptus are a good example.

I suppose, since "air" can also mean melody, that it might refer to a melody that is used as a basis of improvisation, as was common in the Renaissance.

Peace,
Kevin

Or maybe "hair" as in the hair of the dog that bit ya. So after a particularly heavy night of improv, you'll need the hair of improvisation that bit ya.

Rhody, plz help us out.

Jazz musicians don't have a lot of money so eat poorly and burritos are cheap, so at night on the gig you start getting the "Air of Improvisation" on stage. Sometimes you will hear "that cat is playing some stank"

Maybe it means "a veneer of improvisation" ... From the French "l'aire du improvisation". (apologies in advance to the French)

, or maybe it means the scent of Improv.

p.S. You beat me to it Docbop

Come to think of it, "air" just means song, as in Londonderry Air. or is that London Derriere?
