Joe Pass improv.

I should look at Robert Conti's"Jazz Lines" no scales no MODES. I think you are trying to make scales and modes fit and believe me it doesnt work that way-you need to learn Lines over progressions ie a ii-v-i.0r as Joe Pass said "learn tunes"

As I read that, Joe's eyes seem to be staring right at me. Right into my soul.

I don't take a lot of stock in any method that gives ultimatums.

I'm a chord tone guy too, but I know my scales and modes. I advocate a chord tone approach for beginners, as I see them get saddled down with modes and scales when starting out. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't know them or that there's no value in viewing the fretboard that way.

Joe pass said "I try to keep it simple" he also said he doesn't think in modes but in major minor and dominant (which also includes the diminished and augmented)
