From my tutor: narrative.

As a guitar player, I too often fall into the trap of playing notes because they're there and I can. But when I focus on trying to create a sense of narrative (separate phrases, linking those phrases, building up to moments of tension and release, etc), my playing sounds much more interesting.

Also, work on maintaining good tone. Much will be forgiven if you play with good tone. And one of the great things about players like Sonny Rollins, Coltrane, etc., is that they could improvise fast or complicated ideas without sacrificing their tone. So, focus on making the simple stuff sound good, and then as you work up to the more advanced stuff, make sure good tone remains a key element of your sound.

your horn is your voice. start with the melody of the song, and embellish it. move gradually further away from the melody...

or...

record the changes to the tune (Band in a box is great for this) then, sing an improvisation (scat, if you will) over the harmony. go back and figure out what you sang on your horn.

or...

pay attention to the rhythm of the melody. play that rhyhtm, but use different notes

or...

pay attention to the notes of the melody, but play them in a different rhythm

or...

look at the arpeggios that relate to the chords of a tune. So if the chord is "Cmaj7" you play C E G B. any order you want. throw in a few chromatic passing tones. expand the chords--so Cmaj7 can be virtually any kind of C major chord.

(if you're not familiar with all that chord biz, buy a basic music theory book and go thru it)
