From my tutor: narrative.
As a guitar player, I too often fall into the trap of playing notes because they're there and I can. But when I focus on trying to create a sense of narrative (separate phrases, linking those phrases, building up to moments of tension and release, etc), my playing sounds much more interesting.
Also, work on maintaining good tone. Much will be forgiven if you play with good tone. And one of the great things about players like Sonny Rollins, Coltrane, etc., is that they could improvise fast or complicated ideas without sacrificing their tone. So, focus on making the simple stuff sound good, and then as you work up to the more advanced stuff, make sure good tone remains a key element of your sound. |
