Now that I think of it, David Byrne did a fascinating one-time project where he outfitted a loft apartment in NYC with various instruments and objects that were triggered by an organ console.

It was a great idea which was as much a visual and performance art piece as a musical one. As far as I know it was just a one-off project, one of the ten thousand that Byrne has going on at any given time.
The positive aspect of the Metheny project is that he is using real instruments, not electronics or samples. I have no doubt it will be artistic and musically interesting, but I would hope he would go back to collaborating with living human musicians after this.
