Default Best Gift ?

Did you get "the" gift about which you've been hinting for so long? Please share with us

A friend gave me a print I had long admired. It's now on my living room wall.

I bought myself a small present, as it were: a couple of pairs of Sony HDR7506 headphones and a Lexicon rack-mount reverb to go in my "bitsa" PA (Alesis rack-mount mixer and Carvin stereo power amp in a little A-frame rack).

But better than that, I drove to Shreveport LA to see the grand kids Tuesday. The 16-year-old, who is into making videos, got a pro light with a reflector on a stand and her older brother got my surplus-to-requirements Pignose G40V with upgraded speaker and reverb stomp box.

That's about it.

How about you, Randy? Did you buy yourself another guitar or two?

No, I'm OK for now - those two Heritage guitars were good for 2009 and having my wife healthy again was actually more than I'd hoped for - I'll wait a month or two before starting to look around again. Maybe another nice Guild will come my way.

I used to live in Shreveport (my next youngest brother was born there). Lots of fond memories of that area !

We're listening to the CD that you sent, thanks again-

Cheers,
Randy

That's great. Health is a better gift than anything material.

I'm listening to Handel's Messiah (what can I say, I'm a slave to NPR) but when it's over I'll put the Everyday Christmas CD on. I spent so much time (nine months) working on it that I didn't listen to any of it again for a long time.

Regards
Jhn

Ha ha. When I took a gig as a top-40 C&W cover band bassist, the other guys could not believe that I didn't know all of the songs! We still ended up with well over 100 songs (typically went through 60 or so on a 4 x 45" night, and could accommodate requests -- "Do a George Jones song!" OK, that's He Stopped Loving Her Today; "Do a Haggard song!" OK, that's Swinging Doors or Silver Wings, etc). We did some fairly sophisticated stuff (listen to Brooks & Dunns' version of Roger Miller's Husbands and Wives) and that was fine until we got a new vocalist, who was really uncomfortable with more than three chords, and, to his discredit, thought he was right and the rest of us were wrong. So long, honky-tonks.

Goodly number of good gifts and a couple of great ones including a Stellartone Micro Pedal Jazz JMP-606. This is a tiny passive pedal I read about in a recent Guitar Player mag new product review section and is basically a 16 notched position Tonestyler pot in pedal form that can be used with any electric. I played it for an hour of so earlier before I had to cook the Christmas dinner and it did enough to tame faults of all three of my regular players--an EPI JP, DeArmond M-70 and single pickup Tele-clone I cobbled up. Noticeably better tones through both tube and ss especially with the reverb and delay I typically play through. I've wanted to try a Tonestyler tone pot replacement but for the two pickup guitars the hassle of rewiring and expense has keep me from it. With the pedal, you just plug in, play and twist the knob until you hit your sweet spot. I'm so enthused that I'm about determined to get one of the company's pot replacements for a project gutted old Roland synth Ibanez that's been sitting in its case for the last couple of years. Sorry for the rant. Merry Christmas and happy holidays.

We, of all people, don't mind long posts!

Enjoy your Stellartone. It looks like something I might be interested in.

Merry Christmas.

My youngest daughter gave me a $20 gift card to my favorite guitar shop. Her boyfriend and his parents gave me a $25 gift card for Christmas, they also gave me a $25 gift card last month on my birthday. My other daughter and her fiance gave me $40 cash. So I will be hitting the guitar shop with $70 of gift cards, $40 of cash, and high hopes...first thing in the morning!

My wife did not take the hint, she gave me a voice activated GPS system for my car. Oh well, this will help me navigate the city when I track down used guitars from Kijiji!

I was glad to receive the new Martino Documentary which I will watch this afternoon I think. Moreover I'm waiting for my new amp to arrive which hopefully will get her on Tuesday or Wednesday weather permitting :-).

I got the new Monk biography which from all accounts I've been told is absolutely ground breaking insight into the man. Very excited to dig into that once Family heads back to where they make their homes as I await the next semester so I can go back to "yelling" at students, er I mean mentoring!

Wow, Archie, hope he's doing as best as he can. Nothing is more important than good health. Best of luck to your family.

As for me, I got a Lollar Charlie Christian Tele neck pickup, arrived on the 23rd, went out to the guitar shop to get put on my Tele (along with 13-56 rounds and some modern rewiring).

I really like the neck of the Teles--hopefully, these new mods will totally "jazz it up"

He's OK for now, NSJ.

When I got back home yesterday, the '57 Classics I had ordered to put in my Yamaha AES620 had arrived. Now if only I could find my soldering iron.

Better news: my daughter and youngest son called to wish me MC yesterday. I didn't hear from my oldest, which is not unusual (no estrangement, he just observes religious holidays with the same enthusiasm as myself).

He called earlier to announce that he and his long-term girl friend were now engaged. Oh, and by the way, while you're on the phone, Merry Christmas etc.

Delightful news: among her other sterling qualities is a tendency to laugh at my jokes and to not interrupt when I'm tellling one, even one she perhaps has heard before.

In other words, a woman of many virtues. Now, if she just played rhyhthm guitar....

Not exactly a present, but the other day while I was looking at guitars on line, my wife said"Oh, is it time for another one?" Implying that it would be okay with her! Now if I can just find that mahogany dreadnought I'm hearing in my head...

I got a Henriksen hat to go with my amp!
Oh, and one of my favorite old vinyl albums on CD: Guitar/Guitar - Herb Ellis & Charlie Byrd!

Happy New Year All!
Question - I've got the Hal Leonard Real Books (I play guitar chord melody -ES335) and I've seen that Hal Leonard now have for sale a set of 12 CDs covering 240 songs in the Real Book 6th ed. Looks tempting but....

Limted info. available online so:

Has anyone tried these? What do you think? Advise please on how many choruses, mp3 file format?, tracks length, intros, instrumentation, stereo and channel seperation, mute piano - works with Audacity? etc etc - I'm very tempted to buy the set but not going to spend 100 Dollars on something that doesnt suit purpose for practise and live gig accompaniement - Cheers and many thanks - Pequod

Wife and #1 fan came up with a very nice turned maple music stand. Nice addition to the guitar den. Best to all for 2010.

My wife celebrated her 7th year of being cancer free! That and my son are the best gifts I have been blessed with. Now as to the material things, I received a new Ibanez AG95 this week! Completely unexpected from my wife!! That would top the list.

Prayers for your father Archie.
