Are you looking for a durable hollow-body jazz electric optimised for gigging, or a fine acoustic jazz guitar (possibly with a pickup) optimised for low-volume use?

What style will you be playing, eg Big Band rhythm guitar, bebop in small groups, solo guitar, etc ...

Welcome to the forum. My recommendation would be key an eye our for a used Eastman archtop. The quality and playability is fantastic. There are several models to choose from so look and get an idea of what you like.

Have also heard really good things about Peerless archtops.

Cheers,
Steve Z

I'm a big fan of the Ibanez Artcore series. I've got an Ibanez AGS83B, which is a semi-hollow body, and I love it. Very good guitar for it's pretty cheap price.

I played an Aria once and it was alright. I don't seem to remember that it screamed buy me, but at its price likely a good guitar for beginner-intermediate. Here is a link to a review on Harmony Central...

Aria FA-65: Harmony Central User Reviews

Sounds like the guitar needed a professional setup (not uncommon at all with new guitars) and the electronics were average at best. Playability sounds pretty good from the one review.

---

Based on you liking the Aria FA65, looks like you are leaning toward set humbuckers vs a floating pickup... true? Or did you just like the look of the Aria? Carved top or laminate?

If your budget is around $1000 I would still look toward a used Eastman... carved top, excellent neck and feel, great tone, resale will not kick your piggy bank in the behind if you decide to upgrade at some point. Here are a few examples on eBay right now (I am not affiliated with any of them)...

I was just surfing though The Gear Page forum and saw Ibanez AF85 Artcore - $375 PP'd/Shipped. I have heard good things about the Ibanez Artcore series. For that price you would still have plenty left over for a pretty good jazz amp!

(not affiliated with the seller... just passing along the link)

ibanez definately offer great value for money dont judge them on how they sound out of the box though i bought an af75 which for some reason are fitted with really light strings in the factory so i put on some flatwound 11s reset the neck relief and intonation and the guitar now feels and plays like a guitar at three times its value i believe that a lot of people dont realis how much difference having a guitar set up can make even on aguitar new from the shop

Not just that. My AK105 today sounds a lot better than about 11 months ago when I did the final setup. Play it and it will continuously improve in sound. I guess every archtop does but this is the only one I bought new, so I don't have a comparison.

I've been in the same place and been looking for about 2 months. Suggest you try the Godin Fifth Avenue Kingpin (about $700), The Loar 600 ( about $900), and the Eastman 810 ( about $1800) for comparison. I am leaning toward the Loar as it is acoustic, but here is also a 650 model cutaway with pickup for about $1200.What do others think about the Loar?

Over the weekend I saw a local guitar duo playing a Godin Kingpin and a Sadowsky nylon string. Both sounded great!

I have the Godin and it is a great little guitar. I got mine on Ebay for a little over $500 brand new. You can play everything from traditional jazz to rockabilly, just no heavy metal. It has a nice acoustic tone as well.

The Sadowsky is also a beautiful-looking and wonderful-sounding guitar. I am not sure how much they are--they don't list prices on their website--but I'm guessing between $1000 and 2000. If you want a "crossover" nylon string, this would be sweet.

I also have an Epi Joe Pass which I think is a great guitar.

This one?

I'm guessing between $3000 and $4000 for that, but does anyone know for sure?
