i need another amp like a hole in the head, but i'll bid last minute if it's still under $200...could use a backup. well, a backup to a backup, maybethere's so many "what's a good amp" threads here, I'm surprised folks aren't scooping these up a little quicker!

I'm waiting for one to available in Canada. Actually, I have a spouse issue. We moved 'cross country three years ago, and I was is a "toss it out" frenzy. Yup, I gave my Polytone to Vinnie's, the St Vincent De Paul Society. Told my wife it wasn't worth anything. So if I turn around and buy one now...

Any particular branch location of that outfit? Say maybe one in Southern Ontario?

Polytone overload! Right now there are 8 Polytone amps on eBay, including a 2x12. I'm still waiting to find a 15" in Canada.

edit: including this MB II that's currently $255 and has 90minutes of bidding left!

http://cgi.ebay.com/Polytone-Mini-Br...item2ea8831b97

Edit: sold for $430 (19 bids!). That's surprisingly high for a first generation MB II.

They keep coming! There seems to be a steady supply of 5 to 10 Polytones at a time. That should keep the bidding from getting crazy. Here's the next reasonably priced one that will close, a 12":

Polytone Mini/ Teeny Brute 100 Watts Jazz Dream NO RSV! - eBay (item 200401480554 end time Nov-09-09 17:07:31 PST)

$175

Sold for $204.08 (4 bids)

Boy, you guys in the US are so lucky. These thing sell for twice that on eBay in the UK
A friend of mine picked up a mini-brute for £500 a few months ago, the idiot!
When he got it, it looked like someone had rolled it down a hill. Sounded nice though.

Yikes! You can get a new Polytone Mini Brute V for less than that in the US. But maybe you get better deals on Vox in the UK?

I'm not technically minded, but three things come to mind:

1. If you can't do it, can you find someone who can? Do you already know an amp technician?

2. Resistance: I know bad things happen if you take an amp that can only down to 8 ohms and you hook it to a 4 ohm speaker, but doing things the other way is safe. Bad things meaning overheating the amp. But whenever someone asks a question about this on TDPRI, answers tend to be prefaced with "according to legend...". As well, I think there's different advice for tube and SS amps. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Polytones used 4ohm speakers, have you checked your Polytone's speaker?

3. watts: there's always the chance you'll blow out a speaker if you overdrive it. But something tells me you're not going to be taking this on your AC/DC cover band gig.

EDIT: most Polytones have an external speaker jack, right? I'd see how it sounded first, before taking it apart!

Theres a Polytone megabrute at Lark Street for $450. I don't know much about it. I kept getting errors. The blurb says 8" speaker. A bit small for my taste

404 Not found? (EDIT: link is now working: http://www.larkstreetmusic.com/list/pict/D4MegaPoly.jpg )

I always found it funny that the MEGA brute had the smallest speakers of the Polytone guitar amps -- 8". Some people like the "honk" they get from the smaller speakers, but I really like the sound of the 15" speaker in a Mini Brute -- warmer.

MB III. 1x12" 90W. No reverb or red knob. Good condition. It's taking me back: I had a red knob/reverb version of this amp, with the felt and foam exterior. This amp's foam isn't in tatters, so someone must have taken good care of it.

Vintage Polytone Mini Brute III Jazz Guitar Amp NR! - eBay (item 120493821431 end time Nov-22-09 18:16:32 PST)

$99.99

MB II with red knob and reverb. A bit beat up. Not many details, but probably a 100W 12". $259

Polytone mini brut II guitar amp vintage - eBay (item 170409206935 end time Nov-24-09 10:58:50 PST)

EDIT: "This listing has ended". I'm not sure what that means. Maybe the seller canceled it.

I don't usually list the bass amps, but check out this Polytone 101: a 1x15" and 2x8" bass combo amp:

Rare Polytone 101 Jazz Bass Amp! Near Mint - eBay (item 110459607584 end time Nov-29-09 17:00:33 PST)

I guess I'm a sucker for that silly foam and felt covering. What were they thinking? Give a kitten 5 minutes with this amp and it's in tatters. $349.

I bid, $349. This amp really tempted me, but I could only imagine the looks I'd get from my wife, *sigh*.
