| | As an aside, I often wonder if there is any real reason why a bass amp would not also make a great jazz guitar amp, at least for some preferences. They usually have good EQ/tone facilities, and loads of power and headroom. Plus as you have said, 15" speakers can be nice for jazz. I do remember once plugging into a bass combo amp someone had left in a rehersal room, and getting what I thought was a pretty good tone, before a staff member came rushing in to tell me I was using the wrong type of amp, and might even damage it... |

| | Well, the staff member was wrong, first of all, unless you dimed the amp and were windmilling on the guitar!
Sometimes bass amps are said to be EQed for bass registers -- but I've always been able to dial a decent tone from them. Check out this uber bass amp, 12 band graphic EQ (30Hz-15k), 3 band parametric! M-500 Amp | Phil Jones Pure Sound
I lust after that one, but 750 watts?!
Bass amps tend to be cleaner than guitar amps (less speaker warmth?). I like bass amps. |

| | No windmilling for me (I tried it once and only succeeded in removing skin from my fingers ) and I did always suspect the staff guy was talking a load of b&*%$Łks! But that is very much the sort of amp I'm thinking of. Wonderful EQ-ing facilities (and of course bass players are concerned about the upper frequencies also as they do still affect the tone), plus more power than you could ever need. When I do use some sort of distortion, I prefer to do it with a pedal, so all I really want from the amp is a good clean sound. And bass amps seem to do all that in spades! |

Not an amp, but I've never seen a 1x8" + 1x12" Polytone extension. cabinet. The seller doesn't know the ohm rating but dates it to 1979. |

| | MB 1 today closed after failing to attract a bid at Ł300 ($487.71). Now see how lucky you guys are.
With regard to using bassamps for guitar - I used to have a Fender Bassman 50 and 2 x 15 cab (hey, I was 19!). When I upgraded to the 100 watt amp, I kept the 50 and guitarists would beg me to lend it to them. And I do mean beg.
Wish I still had it - sweet tone...... |

| | MB IV, a relisting of reply #42, which didn't meet the reserve bid. Let's see what happens this time. $100. Polytone Mini Brute IV - eBay (item 140374213877 end time Jan-23-10 17:50:05 PST)
EDIT: Sold! $381.76 (8 bids). Much better than its last outing where the best bid was $255.

| | MB II, 12" 140W. Only a year old, like-new condition. $25. Polytone Mini-Brute II Guitar Amp - eBay (item 330396303981 end time Jan-24-10 11:14:23 PST)
I'm thinking this one is going to go for a higher than average price!
Edit: WOW! Sold for $690 (23 bids). I was hoping this thread would show that used Polytones are always bargains, but I think you could do better bargaining at a music store that $690 (plus $45 shipping).

| | Mr Beaumont, sorry to say so, but a Polytone preamp and power supply/power amp are about the *worst* ones to make a head out of.
Reason is the cubish form factor, kludgy, power amp chassis.
Ugly, not suitable to be either front or back mounted in any reasonable head cabinet, way too tall, it was designed for what it does: sit in the bottom of a speaker cabinet, take the least real space possible, no height limits.
Think "skyscraper mentality" and you won't be far from it.
Of course *anything* can be modded if you wish so strongly enough .
If you can work with sheet metal, you can build a new chassis, mount those finned heatsinks on the outside where they belong, and use new, modern, smaller radial filter caps instead of the clamped very large original ones which anyway maybe somewhat dry.

| | MB II, 12" speaker and 140W. Recent model, "like new" condition. Polytone Mini Brute Mini-Brute II Jazz Amp - eBay (item 270521201492 end time Feb-01-10 18:06:08 PST)
EDIT: They nust have seen the MB II that went for $690 in reply #51 because they hoisted the opening bid up to $630. (I think it was $99 before, if memory serves me.) I bet this gets no bids.
EDIT: With less than a day to go and no bids, they've lowered the opening bid to $500. I don't know squat about psychology, so I have to ask: why are people happy to bid up and up when the opening values is low, but won't touch something when the opening is high? My guess is that no one wants to be the first bidder; if the bid is low there's less risk because it's more likely someone will raise you.
EDIT: Sold! $500, 1 bid.
