Guitar The New Kingpin

Ive seen pictures of the new Godin 5th ave. kingpin with 2 P90s. I just wonder have anyone of you guys seen it are played yet, and know what the price on them are. Ive gone to the guitar center here in Austin and they didnt have any. I think they quit handling Godin I dont see many in there only used. Iam very interested, my favorite pickups are P90s. I have a Godin LG all mahogany that I took out the seymour duncan sp3 P90s out and replace them with some early 60s gibson P90s and its now my favorite guitar for blues jazz everything. Since theres none around if anyone of you do run across one please let me know thanks.

Tried one at the local store when I was looking for a semi-hollow.Loved the looks and the woodwork.Did not care for the sound, which is a little too 'raspy' for my liking. The pick ups are pretty noisy,at least on the fender XD that it was hooked up to.No cutaway, making it a little harder to reach the higher frets.
I also listened to somebody perform (blues) with it at a local arts festival. He used a slide and was able to get a little bit of a resonator sound.
Just my two cents.

Tried it. Like my 5th Avenue, it needs to be set up with heavier strings to make the top really work.

Now that they've done one with a cutaway, what I'd REALLY like to see is a no pickup version with the cut!

What's the top? Pressed solid or laminate?

Here's from Godin's site :

«Made from Canadian Wild Cherry, the body of the 5th Avenue features a molded arched top and back, as well as an adjustable bridge, classic f-holes, contoured high-gloss headstock, floating pickguard and cream binding. Also, the rustic beauty of its Custom Polished Finish creates a gorgeous satin sheen reminiscent of the French polish of the 19th century.»

I see "molded" (AKA pressed) but I don't see the word "solid" or the word "laminated", so I'm still wondering.

I talked to them last year about it. They were hoping to have it out this spring. Now that I see it tho I am not floored. I have to admit that every one I try in a store has too-light roundwounds on it. Maybe a set of 14 flats would change my mind. It is great bang for the buck.

I too am hoping to the the non-cuts flood Craigslist

That's what I was leaning toward. Otherwise they would tout the "solid" aspect. That's okay, the ES-175 and Sadowsky Jim Hall are lammies as well.

I was wondering about this guitar, because Iam a big fan of P90 pickups. Among my guitars I have a Godin LG and replace the 2 seymour SP3 P90s with some early 60 Gibson P90s and just love it. I hardly ever pickup my Gibson Les Paul are ES335. I fell in love with P90s listing to old Les Paul himself and his sound. So now Iam looking for a semi are hollowbody with P90s.

Godins are great bang for the buck.

Can we please stop showing this guitar? I fought off GAS for the original 5th ave. and the first non-cutaway kingpin. I'm losing strength.

But then,is the tone of a guitar purely based on the pick ups or a combination of wood, soundhole design, strings etc? I can tell you this much, when I tested the godin I also tested a Ibanez AF75 which seemed to have a much better sustain without the amp and a much mellower tone amped than the godin.
Now if I went by just looks I would have walked out of that store with the 5th avenue. No contest there.

As they say on TDPRI, tone is in the underpants.

well, plugged in that's the pickup-- that P90 style is gonna be a lot more old skool sounding than those ibanex pups.

unplugged, it's all about the wood. i'm not familiar with all the ibanez #'s--gets too confusing...is the 75 a routed pickup?

the godin is cherry, which i'm not sure gets the most press as a great tonewood for tops...but it does look pretty.

the thing i like about the godins is the feel. those skinny necks on the ibanez's (profile wise, not nut width) and "too-big" frets are such deal breakers for me--which is a shame--they look and sound great to me.

i found a non cutaway kingpin on the 'bay for only 500...folks are startin' to ditch 'em for the upgrade...somebody stop me...my wife will not be pleased...

Don't you remember the TDPRI thread: "Do you have any guitars your wife doesn't know about?"

Mr. B...the go to models are the original 5th Ave or the cutaway Kingpin.

You can put heavy PB strings on the acoustic model and Freddie to your hearts content.

...wait, you guys are supposed to be stopping me!

well, I'm a weak man--found one for 500 on ebay and i bit. should be here next week...

even though I got that deal, I'm still gonna move some old stuff out. I got guitars in every room of the house, and I need another one like a hole in the head, but maybe this is a good excuse to get back to basics...

Yeah, but they're cheap. Most archtop-savvy wives would feel relieved.

I've always wanted an ES-125, like jimmy raney played in his early days. You can find lots of 'em pretty cheap (sub 1K) that need a TON of work, or you can find them for 2 grand in good shape. Spending 2 grand on what was a student model guitar doesn't agree with me, so this will be my approximation...

what can i say, like cheaper guitars. If i add up what i've spent on cheap guitars, I could have probably had 1 really expensive guitar...but y'know...I'm married...that's enough monogamy.

Don't be surprised if Godin offers a cutaway version of this very soon.

you think they'll do a cutaway 1 pup model?

anyway, the new 2 pickup cutaway model is probably why i got such a good deal on this one...so i'll go with it!
