| | Cube 60 Story (Long) I was invited to a backyard barbeque/music jam this afternoon. Though these jams are often less than musically enriching, I was hungry so I went. Figuring it was going to focus on blues and ‘classic’ rock, I brought a Tele (actually a Hamer T51 strung with 11’s and sporting HD V+ pickups – a tremendously versatile guitar) and my Cube 60. The first cool thing was that I didn’t need to use the trunk of my small 4-door sedan: I put the passenger seat all the way back and the Cube 60 sat neatly on the floor in front of it while the guitar in its case laid across the back seat. The second cool thing is that I carried my entire rig around to the back yard in one trip. When I got there I saw that the lineup would be 4 guitar players, 2 keyboard players and a drummer (no bass). Oy! The other guitar players’ setups were as follows: 1) Les Paul into a Hot Rod DeVille; 2) Strat into a Marshall Half-Stack; 3) Strat into a Hot Rod Deluxe. One of the keyboard players had an old JC77 (sounded great); I think the other one was running through the PA. There were 2 or 3 mics for vocalists as well (one was used by the ubiquitous harp player). Well, the Cube 60 looked puny amidst all these fire-breathing dragons. Ah ha, but it didn’t sound like it! I used the JC Clean channel for rhythm with the volume at 12 O’clock and the Tweed model with gain at 9 O’clock and volume at 12 O’clock for leads. That’s pretty much maxed out for the Cube 60 in my estimation – it starts to sound a bit grainy after that (but then there’s always the speaker emulated line-out into a PA if the situation warrants it). And yes, I did wear ear plugs! Anyway, while admittedly my Rivera wouldn’t have even been breaking a sweat in that situation, I was really pleased with the way the little guy hung with the big boys! Of course, towards the end the overall volume inched up a bit, and I was briefly in a bit of a quandary. But then I switched the lead channel over to the Classic Stack model (which I never use at home or when recording), and it added just enough extra cutting power to continue holding its own in the mix. (Makes sense: emulating the same basic circuit design, but using EL34s in place of 6L6s.) A hot Tele bridge pickup didn’t hurt either! So, while the context was somewhat more crude than my normal jazz duo with a keyboard/sax player, a good time was had by all – especially me and my little buddy, the Cube 60! And the burgers were excellent! |

| | TK - beware of modeling amps in the big jam situation. I was in one last summer where my Vox Valvetronix and another guy's Cube 30 dropped out due to voltage inconsistencies, even with a good power conditioner in place. Both had enough power output, so no problem cutting through, just problems cutting out. I'll take another amp next time. |

Great that the burgers were excellent also.

My power supply was wired 100 years ago and my mobile cube cuts in and out when I put the AC on. And, it won't run on rechargeable batteries, only alkaline.

| | This thread got resurrected by a spammer - I sold the Cube 60 about a year ago. I've got a Henriksen JazzAmp112 and a ZT Club now. But what I said in my original post still holds - the Cube 60 was a very impressive amp for its size and price. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
