Of course it depends on your band, and like Buster rightly says, too loud is no good for anybody. On the other hand, you might be happier in the long run with 60w. You could be OK in one venue and get lost in the mix in another. The keys are more competition than the drums for that mid-range sonic space and you want to be soft enough to blend and still be able to punch through when needed. Too much power you can back off; not enough and you're toast.

It really depends on how loud the band is, but for jazz, generally it should be loud enough.

If the drummer is too loud for a 40w amp, give him some brushes

i gig with a 40XL 3 nights a week in a restaurant with 100 people eating along with a saxophonist a pianist and a full rythm section on a laptop. Its plenty loud enough for larger gigs, i use an old 80's Roland Super Cube.

Best of luck.

I have tried this one in playing with Big Band and the power seems to be enough , but not for solo playing - it just disappears in sax and trombone section - for rhytm its ok - and the good thing is built-in looper : )

Mine was sounding plenty loud, but it blew up right in the middle of performing Cat Scratch Fever, and I didn't bring a back-up. Screwed....
