The Excelsior would be great if it had reverb. I dare say more cats are going to use reverb than tremelo. Great price range for the new stuff.

I thought it looks a good bet for a warm sounding jazz amp, I've got 2 on order for the shop!

It would have been tough to put a spring reverb into the Excelsior at that price. Most folks have a reverb pedal.

Yeah...I am not sure about pedals. I have never used one and have now been spoiled by my Ampegs awesome reverb(echo).

Its a neat looking amp for sure.

The Excelsior looks great, but I'm afraid 13W might not have enough clean headroom for jazz. Should be great for anything where a little breakup is welcome.

I'd be interested in comparing it to the Ibanez Wholetone amp.

Maybe this time they make a single-channel with reverb Vibrolux in a 1x12 Princeton size... I hope so!

I would LOVE a vibrolux reverb 1x12 that size that was reasonably priced.

I *think* (not 100% sure yet) that it's going to be around £270. As for delivery there's none in the country yet but hopefully in the next 2 weeks or so.

Thanks Dan. I'd be interested to read your first impressions, when you get one in the shop.
Thanks

Reverb

I also think a reverb makes more sense than tremolo. And hey Jazzman: Get a Strymon blueSky:

Call me crazy, but I don't think tubes do jack for reverb. I've played at least three solid state reverb pedals that I like as well as any: the Styrmon, an EHX Cathedral, and some Digitech model (don't remember which). Tubes have good qualities, but I wish more people would put digital reverb (or other effects) in their tube amps. Anyway, my question about the Excelsior would be if there is an effects loop.

Excelsior Speaker

The little sucker has a 15" speaker! That ought to move a lot of air, helping with volume and helping at least somewhat to alleviate headroom cramps.

But hey, the thing looks killer. Me Want!!

Looks cool. Until someone gets one we have not clue who this amp is geared to. It really depends how well it stays clean, whether it will be good for jazz.

Does the output transformer look small to anyone?

No, its not that clean with the stock pre-amp tubes (12AX7's) and the volume up but it sounds decent up to 5 with "dark" selected. If I had one, I would be tempted to swap out the AX7's for some with less gain and I'd bet the headroom would improve a bit. And it probably won't be long until someone tries hotrodding it with a bigger transformer and a pair of 6L6's.

That, too. But a couple of lower gain 12A's would only set you back $20 or so for starters.

And do you think that bright/dark switch could be swapped with a tone knob?

Too bad about the clean...amps with an accordion input are usually great "sleeper" amps for a clean jazz tone...

Nice tremolo. Your right though it doesn't sound like it has enough clean headroom for jazz.

Certainly fine as a practice amp...but how many practice amps do I need?

Just having a tremolo circuit adds gain...

Truhfully, any tube amp at a low volume can be used for a clean jazz practice tone...but it usually seems with these "little screamers" that most of the thought in them went into getting that dirty tone "right," which means the clean sound usually sounds like a rather bland afterthought.
