Default Benson interview

George Benson: Still the Coolest of Cats - Premier Guitar

Two major things: Fender will release a George Benson amp and Wes Montgomery used a metronome.

This reaffirms, for me anyway, that GB is the best ever!! I know that might sound like a young kid talking about Eddie Van Halen or something, but, for me, for my tastes and how I assess jazz guitarists . . George is the best ever to live!! . . . (or at least a close tie with Joe Pass)

Quick story about George Benson . . . (I love to tell stories)

Back in the mid 1980s after I stopped gigging, I worked for a management company in midtown Manhattan NYC. I was helping to prepare one of our artists for a road tour. We were in a sound stage studio in Manhattan with his band. When we finished with the evenings rehearsal (about 2:00 AM) we were walking down the hall and heard some great jazz coming from another one of the studio rooms. We opened the door to see who the hell was making this great jazz music. It was George Benson, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. They were going over a few tunes for a show that they were doing later that week at The Village Vanguard. Wayne Shorter took his horn out of his mouth when he saw us and said . . . "is it time already?" "We said no man. were just listening". George said ... . "well then, come on in, sit down and relax". They played on for about another hour. Great group of guys . . all very humble and very well disciplined.

I am not even his biggest fan (there are lots of guitar players I like much more) but I found those two facts I have mentioned very interesting (and I also know he has lots of fans here). The Metheny story was also interesting but I already knew he had got Wes guitar.
