Default Distortion Question

Hey Folks,

I"d appreciate any input (no pun intended) on an electrical problem I'm having. On a guitar with an inset magnetic pickup on some days (not always) various notes fart out/distort when using my 55 watt or 80 watt amps but never do when using my 800 watt A.I. I was thinking it might be the input jack - could that be wattage dependent? I've sprayed the jack numerous times with contact cleaner but it doesn't seem to help. My next step would be replacing it but a weekend of wiring wouldn't be fun if I'm not sure it will help. Thanks for any insights.

Do you set the guitar's volume (and/or tone) pot differently with different amps? I'd be more inclined to wager it's a bad section of a pot, or a bad capacitor...on the guitar if it happens on more than one amp, but not on all amps.
