Default How would you solve this?

This song starts with a kind of clean solo guitar tone, but from 3:50 it turns to a little distorted tone:

Zaire Attack - Quatre Bouton - YouTube

I wonder how you can reproduce this distorted tone? I wonder if any effect was used, because how is it then that the fist half has no distortion? I suspect it is only the compressor or some other element that is overdriven and starts distorting for increased intensity in picking, or something else. What is your idea? Very likely a Fender Jaguar was used in this song as I know.

Like you say, sounds like he's just picking a tad harder or its louder as hes double stopping at that bit. Doesnt sound quite like a SS amp distortion, although he could be playing straight into a hifi amp, pa mixer, effects chain etc any of which could break just that little bit.

Does just sound like something is breaking up. Maybe a small amp or something. Cool clip, thanks!

Default Maybe just pickup switching?

Just a guess, but maybe he switched from front pickup to both and has a certain sound and tone dialed in? It did sound a bit like that.

I also have an idea that maybe the distortion results from picking note couples in the second half. In the first part the soloist plays mostly single notes, while in the second half he plays 6ths and such note couples. I experienced in case of some of my compressors and chorus pedals that when I play note couples, they tend to distort, I don't know why. Maybe this change in tone is a result of that.

But it can easily be the result of setting the switch to a different position on the guitar.
