I thought I'd share a few quick thoughts with you guys about my latest love affair. A few years ago, I started looking for a new jazz work horse and a guy at a local shop suggested that I check out an SG. I shrugged off the recommendation (despite having never played one) under an impression that they were heavy "rocker" style guitars -- well, a few months ago, Carol Kaye switched from Ibanez to the fine Gibson 60's SG Tribute and I couldn't help myself but to go try one on for size.
I was really mistaken about the SG. Firstly, the neck dive issue that I had heard is really not of issue -- the guitar seems very well balanced on my lap. The shorter (vs Fender) scale and bridge placement allows a very well placed seated position or standing position for me. I ended up buying an SG Tribute that has wonderful P90s. There is a slight hiss from the pickups, but it's very manageable and the tone is really wonderful.
These guys run around $800 @ musiciansfriend, so you can keep an eye out for a 15% off sale (like today) and get a pretty decent deal on a brand name American made guitar. I've played mine through a variety of ZT amps and an Acoustic Image Coda+. Always with George Benson Flatwound 12s. Such a sweet combo -- I really feel like the P90s offer a tone that sits in well with the band. The guitar is light weight, balanced, just easy to play.
I strongly recommend those looking at guitars at least TRY an SG before they take their next plunge. It's certainly not what I thought it would be -- a lot more playable and functional. You may have a real winner on your hands -- with an added benefit of a 24.75" scale matching a lot of the higher end archtops, etc...
Cheers!
