Amps 6L6 tubes vrs EL84's on the clean channel?

I am wondering if a tube guitar amp that has 6L6 power tubes will sound any different on it's clean channel if you put in EL84's? I am thinking there may be a slight difference but the character of the tubes really come to life when you overdrive them. I want a nice big clean sound, and I am not sure if the EL84's would change the overall tone of the amp.

(Background info on my question) A Carvin XAmp I used to own had 6L6 tubes in it. I had the head with 4 twelve cabinet. I am thinking about getting their 2 twelve version which has been updated with several nice features. It's updated version they put in EL84's. I think I could ask them to put in 6L6 tubes but I am not sure if this would really change things on the clean side. I want the amp more for the clean channel and some smooth overdrive. Looking for the Larry Carlton type of sound. I also have a Vox pedal board where I could just add one of the preamp sounds to help bring overdrive while remaining clean.

You can't put el84s in a 6L6 amp, the sockets and plate voltages are totally incompatible. Amps that are designed for el84s usually use about 300-350 volts dc, whereas a 6l6 amp will use 450-500, which would destroy any el84 tube.
You might be able to use el84s with a special ''yellow jacket'' adapter, but they will overdrive at much lower volumes and I can't see that giving you a ''nice clean sound'', more like a nasty, dirty sound. Maybe you mean el34's - they can sometimes be directly substituted.
The 6L6 is known mainly as a ''clean'' tube - that's why fender has always used them. el84s or el34s would only make your amp dirtier-sounding.

Thank you for your reply; when I called Carvin they said the Vintage amp is actually better suited for jazz, and the Larry sound. CarvinWorld.com - Guitars, Amplifiers & Pro Audio

Looking in selling my Fender Twin (red knobs) and perhaps getting the Carvin amp.

Yes, when I think 6L6 I think Twin Reverb.
