Guitar What is the most common top for semi hollow bodies?

Carvin now having a cedar top for their SH550's, and sparked an interest in me. The standard top they have on their guitars is maple.

1. What is the most popular guitar top for semi holow body guitars?

2. What is the sound difference it would produce having a cedar top over maple? I know maple is a bright wood, but cedar....? In looking at the George Benson guitar, his has a spruce top. Would this give you a more acoustic sound compared to maple?

I don't know, but most carved archtop guitars do have spruce tops (I've seen a few with cedar too) - there has to be a reason for that! So I would think if you want a bit of that vibe in a semi-acoustic, a carved spruce top could not be a bad thing.

In my opinion, the most common material for semi solids is some type of figured maple. That's what Gibson used on the 335's and 355's. I would say spruce is next. I also feel that the sound difference using different top materials is not that significant especially at the volumes some of these guitars need to get to.
