Default EQ Pedal

Hi!

I am looking for an EQ pedal. Small, 9V and that doesn't mess with my tone. So far I have narrowed it down to the MXR 6-band EQ. Any other suggestions? I know Empress Para EQ is great but its too expensive.

Thanks!

An EQ pedal is supposed to mess with your tone.

when you say mess with tone, you mean noise and hiss? or do you mean colouring the natural tone in an undesirable/unintended way?

graphics are always gonna introduce hss and noise because you're boosting freq., though analogman do some well recomended boss modded graphics. never tried one, but meant to be much better in terms of noise.

avoid the mxr, it's shite and very noisey.
if it has to be a graphic, check the maxon 6band one.

jzucker on the forum turned me onto the barber barb eq. now that is an amazing eq pedal......check his youtube chanel for a demo.

I have a Boss EQ-7 pedal. It can hiss a bit if placed in the input channel, but not if placed in the effects loop. Mind you, that is with my amp (an old Evans), and the mileage may vary with your amp.

As others have said, the very purpose of using an EQ is to mess with the tone.

Of course is supposed to mess with your tone, what I dont want is to have the EQ flat, turn it on and get already a completely different sound.

Will check the Maxon and the Barber, but I think they are a little expensive for me right now. I have seen jzucker use the barber with the Henriksen and really liked the effect. I had a good idea from the MXR, will try one and see what I can get. I am not a big Boss fan but if I catch a GE-7 on a store here I will try iy

I may get a Maxon GE601 for a good price.. Anyone tried them? Whosgarrethparry whats your opinion of the maxon?

My boss EQ-7 has noticable hiss so I don't use it. Since I have a dual source system (mic plus pickup) I plug into a small mixer. It has enough control with the high, low and mid to shape my sound. The mic needs a little boost anyway.

Ended up with a Boss GE-7 with Monte Allums mods - my tech had one he sold me for a very good price... Has a little noise - nothing relevant live! Never tried the stock one but this one works fine. Also tried the Maxon, much more expensive and it doesn't had anything to the Boss.

One day I will upgrade to the Empress...

Another update: got a very good deal on a Fromell Shape EQ and had to get it. Now that's a great pedal! You can really take your tone anywhere... highly recommended! Oh and quiet as hell... absolutely no hiss! And the buffer is something... Parametric is the thing for EQ pedals.

Will keep the Boss with the MA mods - its a sweet pedal and a good learning tool.
