I think of Montreal as a hard rockin' town, but that CC is tasty! Just curious, is it strictly for trade or have there been a price mentioned?

I saw it too... I imagine he must have big $$$ in mind...
Funny, this very week-end, on kijiji Montreal as well, I found a princeton reverb (SF from the 70s) just 5 minutes after the add was posted. I called the guy, and his wife's father just died and was the original owner. I got it for 500$! It was a good day, its like new!

He is willing to sell it, but will only listen to serious offers, whatever that means...

I know this guitar. It was bought off ebay from a store in California in May 2011: Vintage Gibson 1979 ES-175 Charlie Christian MINT! CC | eBay

He got it for $3000.00.

It was supposed to be mine but the seller decided not to sell it to me when he learnt that I was and am based overseas. So, it was re-listed and I am almost sad to see it being resold so soon because I had wanted to keep it, not flip it.

Montreal as one of the world's biggest Jazz Fest every year. I grew up in Montreal and its now only a 1 hour drive for me.

Anyway, quick question. I see there appear to be 3 screws into the archtop (just below the pickup). Is that normal?

Not my ad but I am going to say yes... others I have seen have the same thing (as did the original CC pickup)

what isnt normal is the work done on the cutaway where a threeway switch was installed.

The seller mentioned it as having been put there by a previous owner; it was subsequently removed and the hole filled in.

I used to have one of those. The acoustic sound was like a laminate normally sounds but electrically it sounded great. It was sweet, clear and warm. It was an excellent guitar.

Is 1979 really considered vintage these days?

Yep.. Pre 1980.

People are paying a lot more now for guitars from fender and gibsons darkest years.

And they truly were the darkest years. It was THOSE years that spawned the whole vintage thing to begin with - a direct reaction to just how BAD those guitars were!

I am the original owner of a '79 ES175CC, $800 new w/case at Venemans Music in Maryland. That time frame (Norlin period) was very hit and miss in QC. Fortunately I have one of the better ones, it has an excellent neck (very little movement over the years) plays great. The finish is fine, no better or worse than expected on a production laminate archtop. The tone and original CC pup is classic swing and jazz. The guitar has a great vibe.

Is hum from the pickup a problem ?

I really fancy one of these type of guitars
Cos I like the tone (CC , Barney etc)

I might look into one of these
TAURUS CO., - EASTMAN GUITARS AR605E

There is some hum, but manageable - no worse than a Fender single coil and less than the P90s on a Les Paul.
