| | Flattop Jazz Players/Guitars I was listening to some Gilad Hekselman today, and thought about how he plays a Gibson Howard Roberts (not the fusion). He gets such a great jazz sound, and the guitar is essentially a flattop acoustic with a humbucker. Well, is this possible to recreate with any flattop, using a floating humbucker? What sort of considerations would there be with feedback, strings, etc.? Are there any other players that do this effectively to get a traditional electric jazz guitar sound like Gilad? |

| | Yeah, he is playing an archtop, not a flattop. There are however, sever great jazz players who do use a flattop. My favorite is Eric Skye. Eric's guitar is a Santa Cruz OO. His main preference for amplification is a mic into a PA.

It had an oval soundhole in the same position as the soundhole of a flattop, so on a quick glance it might appear as one: http://liveassets.rationalpathinc.ne...dh0ohc3_so.jpg
I remember playing some when I taught at a music store in the 70s, wasn't particularly impressed, but that is of course looking through thirty some years of memory.

| | I was a big admirer of Gabor Szabo, he did most of his playing on either a Gibson 160E or Martin D-45 with a soundhole pickup, probably a DeArmond, they were popular in the 60s. He definitely had his own sound and style.

| | Here, Scofield is playing (very nicely) what looks like a 0-18 or 00-18.
And here, Jordan Officer on a D-21. |

| | My main acoustic guitar is a 1934 L-4 with a round sound hole. Like the Gibson Howard Robert mentioned in the original post, it may look like a flat top at first glance although it is an archtop. |

I owned a 1967 or so Epiphone Howard Roberts. It's the one guitar that I REALLY mourn giving up. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
