| | When You Can't Find What You Want... Make it yourself! Floating P90 goodness.
Obviously not finished yet, but it's looking good so far. It'll be gloss black when finished. Pots and tone cap on the way along with a bone saddle ebony bridge.
The 5th Avenue won't know what hit it!

| | No, it's going on a black 5th Avenue. I had a floating mini on it, but I couldn't get along with it. She was begging for some P90 action and I couldn't find a floater anywhere. So I'm making it myself.
The pickup is a soapbar stolen from a PRS with the cover removed, the rest is cut from birch.
I'm crossing my fingers that I got all my spacing right. As soon as the pots arrive, I'll hook it up and test it. Then, gloss black lacquer.

| | If that works, EG, you may be able to quit your day job and start making git stuff. Great looking pickguard. Can't wait to see how it turns out. |

| | Work continues.
My new ebony and bone bridge.
The prototype in place.
With a dry fit of the pickup.
Functional protoype with ghetto masking tape adhesion.

| | The big issue now is spacing. The wooden tray mount won't work. I'll have to come up with a side mount method.

| | Plus, I scored a couple of nice pieces of cherry for the final product. I thought it appropriate since the guitar is made of cherry.

| | Another issue is that the Godin sounds like a whole new guitar with the ebony bridge. My wife is trying to convince me to take it back all acoustic.

EG | She sounds like a keeper!
You've said as much in the past. I get that you're chasing something and trying to make it work, and luckily in that chase you are finding some cool sounds like that ebony bridge. I hope you have the same luck with the pups. Not sure if you'll find anything that'll ever sound as sweet as it does acoustically, but you never know what's done the road. |

| | A keeper she is.
Always wanted a P90 guitar. This seemed like a likely candidate.
We'll see. If I can't resolve my spacing issues, though, this may get filed in "unpossible." Did some work last night but had no success. I'll try some other things today.

| | An update.
Got the prototype functional and found a few issues.
I had an opportunity to play a 1948 ES125 and learned why I thought this project wasn't sounding right. It's the pickup, dummy!
The P90 I have (from a PRS SE soapbar) sounds nothing at all like the Gibson. It's hot, brash, honky and not particularly musical sounding.
My research has taught me that the magnets are different (A5 new, A2 old) as well as the baseplate material (brass vs nickel silver) and wire are different. The new pickup is also much hotter (9k vs 6k).
So, I've recuited Ken from Rose Pickups to assist. He's actually designing a new pickup for this project. It will be a P90 type with a few tweaks to thin things out a bit.
I'm very excited by this turn of events. Will keep you posted.
