I own an SX GG7--a lefthanded model. When I first got it, I did not bond with it--dunno why--and within a few days I swapped it for another instrument at the local guitar shop--where it sat for about a year, unbought.
A few months ago, I began playing it again at the shop, and then DID bond with it. (Still can't figure out why I didn't like it when it first arrived.) Anyhow, now it's mine again and I like it a lot.
Okay--it's an inexpensive-basic chinese instrument, but it does the job ok, especially after some basic mods & set-up. (and for lefties there are NO other no-frills, low-cost archtops like this available, as far as I know).
Here's what I've done to mine to make it better than as-bought:
1. replaced with stock gears with klusons.
2. replaced the stock tune-o-matic bridge with an adustable rosewood bridge. MUCH WARMER & FATTER (better IMO) tone from this.
3. strung it with D'addario 12 Chromes.
4. replaced the stock humbucker with a humbucker salvaged from an Epiphone SG. It sounds much better than the stock, but when $$ permits, a better PU (and pots) will be mounted--maybe a p-90 or alnico bucker.
5. Careful set-up to suit my playing & needs. New nut, action etc. Filed a couple of too-high frets.
Strictly for aesthetics, I refinished the top. That triangular-ish sunburst did NOT delight me. It's now natural maple, with a light lacquer over a shellac sealer.
Oddly enough, I often play it unplugged--it's not loud, acoustically, but sounds very warm & sweet with the wooden bridge and the chromes.
My income is VERY limited--that and being lefty makes me SO glad that Rondo Music offers this guitar (and their many other lefty guitar offerings.)
