Help Wher to place strap button on vintage archtop

I have a 1949 Epiphone Zephyr Regent Deluxe in need of a strap button. Post factory button was placed on the back of the neck. The button does not hold any more. I do not want to place a larger screw in the same spot. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to place it . Possible back ? I am in need of a new strap can anyone suggest a nice strap and company.
thanks
Jolsin

Honestly?

I would not put another whole in that guitar. You never know. What I would do is get some wood filler and place it in the existing hole, along with the strap button that is now too small. Or even a good wood glue.

Or I would at least ask a qualified repairperson. Maybe I would call Stewart MacDonald, the well known guitar repair company in Ohio, and ask what they would do. Couldn't hurt to try and get some free advice from them.

Good Luck

Usually, I would put a button on the back of the heel. If that is where the current one was, then I would not simply put in a wooden screw. I would drill it out to slightly larger hole into which I would glue a dowel - this will be a much more solid hold for the old screw and would be much stronger than filler. Since it is an old instrument, I would have a luthier do it. If it is done right, it will look good and be very solid. If you can't wait you could try tying it to the headstock until you get it fixed.

Peace,
Kevin

You could have a luthier or competent guitar tech fill the hole and place it at the same place again.

The place I prefer is on the treble side of the heel.

Put a hardwood dowel that is smaller than the existing screw-hole, along with a tiny bit of wood glue. Then put the screw back in. It'll hold. Some people even use matches or toothpicks. I prefer hardwood, as it will lessen the likelihood of another tear-out.

The guitar is trying to tell you to sit down and play. Wes and Grant say to strap it to the headstock.
