Default The right strings...

Here's a discovery I've found that I'm quite pleased with, maybe to those of you who are still looking for the right strings, you may find this interesting.

I find that while they sound great, flatwound strings aren't responsive enough for my liking. Regular roundwound strings seem a bit too bright and thin. And while half-round (or ground-wound) strings sound great at first, they don't last at all for me, and they sound tubby and dead shortly after breaking them in.

On a whim, I tried DR Zebras 12-54, and I'm very surprised at the result. They have alternating windings of Nickel and Phosphor Bronze over steel core, so they're much warmer and not as "spanky" as regular round-wound. Amplified, they're very warm and round, and with the Nickel and Bronze plating, the wound strings aren't quite as "hot" to the pickup as with other strings, so the unwound B and high E strings are louder and more balanced with the other strings.

So, if anyone's up for a string experiment, these are worth a shot. Especially amplified, they sound pretty amazing.

interesting. i'll have to try them out.
my latest find has been john pearse pure nickel jazz gauge. he makes one with a extra long wound D that is perfect for my old epi with the frequensator. every other string i had tried is so short that i was winding the unwound part of the string around the tuner. that and they sound and feel amazing. very warm abd clear...and cheap. hope pearse keeps making them!

These were recommended for electro-acoustics .
